Choke

Chuck's first instant bestseller. Choke was also Chuck's second book to become a movie.

Themes of Religion in Palahniuk novels

For one of my classes, I have to write a 25 page paper that compares an author to some bigger theme. For my piece, I've decided to analyze Chuck Palahniuk books and compare them to religion. However (regrettably) I haven't read all of them. Books that I am definitely looking to include are Invisible Monsters, Choke & Damned -- are there any others that you would recommend?

Sorry if this is a bit misplaced...I just figured that 'Choke' was the most outwardly religion based.

Thanks!

Confused abot parts of plot

I have a few questions about the plot of "Choke," bear in mind that there will be SPOILERS ahead!

1. Did Dr. Paige Marshall just completely make up the entire story about Jesus's foreskin and Victor's mom being impregnated with it?

2. If Victor's mom kidnapped him from a stroller when he was an infant, why did she tell Denny (pretending to be Victor) that everything that Victor needs to know about his father is in her diary? Did the diary really just explain how she kidnapped Victor?

3. Is it ever stated exactly how Dr. Marshall escaped the hospital, because when she arrives at the empty lot at the end her medical bracelet is still intact.

4. Could someone simplify the ending for me? Including what Denny was doing with the stones, why the walls he built fell when the audience dropped their stones, and anything else that's really important that happened in the last few chapters? read more »

My choke post is gone?

In it I identified with numerous aspects of the book and basically stuck to topic. How and why do posts get deleted and did I do something wrong?

Premise

Isn't the premise of this book kind of silly? People save him in restaurants and then send him money - I have never heard of anyone doing that, and can't imagine anyone doing that.

On "Dr." Paige Marshall

Hi everyone,

There's this thing I have been wondering about... In the not-so-good movie adaptation of the book (spoiler alert, but not much of a masterpiece anyway Wink, it is revealed that Dr. Paige Marshall is in fact not a doctor, but a deluded patient who stays at St. Anthony's voluntarily.

However, at some point in the book, there's a moment when one of the nurses calls Paige "Ms. Marshall", to which she replies in a very defensive way. At some later moment, it is revealed that Paige is in fact married. So do you think there is any real suggestion in the book that Paige might not be a real doctor as well, or did I miss something?

The "Choke" enterprenuerial technique

One of the themes in "Choke" that seems understated in the book is the fact that this guy gets money through getting rescued from choking by restaurant patrons who then help him out financially over time.

I hadn't paid much attention to that until I fell down at the supermarket the other day.

There was some syrupy goo outside the exit door, I slipped and fell to the ground. I wasn't hurt in any serious way, although I was limping a little for the afternoon. And I had syrupy goo on my pants leg.

The manager was apologetic and fretful. I am convinced that if I so much as said "ouch" he would have summoned an ambulance.

I tried to convince him that I was fine, and that the only thing I was worried about was that someone else might fall and get seriously hurt, so please get someone to clean up the goo. Which he did. read more »

Choke - Victor=Jesus? I'd need some help.

hey,
I have to write a comparison between the "real" Jesus and a modern personification of him, like for example Victor Mancini in Choke.
With focus on the resurrection.
Thats for my religion lessons, and i thought the character of Victor Mancini might be a good and interesting choice.

I just wanted to ask for some advices or ideas concerning my topic.
like "where are similarities and where are differences between Victor and Jesus?"

so ive gota question....

if victor is the "backbone of colonial america" he is probably a pioneer right......well one of the big ideas of the book is that there is almost nothing that hasn't been explained. but it seems through his addiction and experiences(and his moms) he finds some unexplained things. am i just crazy or did someone else see that
