Denny...
Is it just me, or is Denny one of the best Characters Chuck has ever written?
denny collects rocks. cool.
I am jack's irrational fear
I absolutely agree, Denny is the best character in Palahniuks book's so far (I have yet too read Lullaby and Invisible Monsters). Fantastically entertaining in all his stupid intelligent foolishness... Absolutely brilliant!
"Reality means you live until you die, the agent says. The real truth is nobody wants reality."
"I'm not so much a good friend as I'm the doctor who wants to adjust your spine every week.
I'm not so much a good friend as I'm the savior who wants you to worship him forever.
I'm not so much a good friend as I'm the parent who never wants you to really grow up." - Mancini... "Choke"
While re-reading some choice moments in "Choke" with Denny, it becomes abundantly clear to me. Denny is important to all of us. By Denny being the consumate fuck-up he is shown from the very beginning to be, the everyman loser, the Hitchcockian antihero... like some kind of uncomfortable, not handsome, underdog hero caught up in a web of mistaken identities and constantly at the will of confused people around him... Denny becomes the mecca, the hub of alll that matters in this world.
Without Denny all else would fall apart. In Mancini's life for sure, as he needs to feel needed, and like many of us, to feel superior in some way to someone else, otherwise we become like Denny, which I don't think is as bad as it may seem to some, but nonetheless ends your vulnerable locked-up ass up in the stocks with blind, deformed chickens pecking at your exposed ankles, animal crap on your shit-streaked wig and a flock of tourists commemorating their superiority for all time onto pieces of film, to be filed away in photo albums for times when they need a pick me up.
Denny suffers through most of the story, yet we never see him feeling bad about it. Sure he's depressed. Sure, his life is shit. Sure, he has nothing to live for, but does that stop him? Hell no, and that makes me dig the dude all the more. They should Saint this dude already...
The mind is the limit. I am going to be the best personal trainer to ever exist on this earth. I am going to inspire, motivate, and change lives. I have that power. There is not a doubt in my mind that I can make you have an orgasm just from the power of my mind via the internet. I'm a giver like that. I can heal you. I can make you whole. That's Brock. That's what I do. Moving on...
"Denny suffers through most of the story, yet we never see him feeling bad about it."
It's only suffering if you choose to suffer... Denny doesn't. Good book.
"The world will little note nor long remember what we say here." - Abe
"Having now finished the work assigned to me, I retire form the great theatre of Action; and bidding an Affectionate farewell to this August body under whose orders I have so long acted, I here offer my Commission, and take my leave..." - George
"The rest is silence." - Bill
Denny is so charming.
'No Victor, im really a great actor, just pretending to be your masturbation addicted best friend'
I always pictured him for some reason, while i was reading Choke-- visualising you see-- as a shaved head Benicio del Toro. Weird. I dont know why.
life's pretty straight without vidalia :You_Rock_
Benicio del Toro. Interesting.
Yeah, Denny is definitely one of the best characters so far. Always seemed to say the right thing to make me laugh and think at the same time. Certainly one of my favorites.
I think that denny is a great character, i agree.
But I still don't think he beats out Tyler Durden.
We're the culture that cried wolf.
yeah,tyler is the best

Denny is an amazing charector, and I loved how he filled Macini's house full of rocks, even though such a thing is so hard to believe. And I think Denny is much like Chuck himself. After all, Chuck does build walls out of rocks.

Tyler was a visionary. Denny was a sign. It would be awesome if their charectoristics were combined into eachother. That would be an interesting charector.
Q.
Is the name somekind of "nod" to da Dennis here???
It Does Not Matter
Is what some kind of nod to Dennis?
sedated, i know that the name is. but i don't know about the character himself.
and i agree, tyler durden is one of the great all time fictional characters.

Why is it absurd? That's what I thought when I first read Choke.
And Miss Kitten (who will NEVER POST MORE THAN ME) what's your source that verifies your certainty? I think I've read every bit of Chuck media on this site, and I've never once seen the correlation officially mentioned. Did he say so at a reading or something?
Damnit, you just posted that... so answer me while I'm still here.
dennis said so i think in the chat room.
the record i'm going for isn't more posts than you it's 500 in a shorter time than you.

That's awesome. Thank you. And good luck on that whole totally insifigant "fastest poster" nonsense. Everyone knows it's the one who can go the longest, not the fastest, that counts.
Ack... must go cold shower... NOW.
wow that's really getting to you. i'm already up to like a month and a half and that's without trying.
i have found that the longer you go without, the easier it gets. in fact i try not to too often b/c that's when it becomes a habit.

Hey,
I'm really not sure, but I'm pretty positive Chuck didn't name "Denny." after me. I say this b/c, he admitted to naming the "Dennis" that Victor takes for himself in the mock rape scene after me. If you recall, there's also an "Amy" named in the book at this point. This being a nod to the Amy that use to run the site with me.
Then again, you can look at Victor's decision to use the name "Dennis" during that scene an inside, friendly joke to him incriminating his pal Denny. So that once again puts a connection to Denny and me. Who knows.
I haven't read CHOKE in a long time.

thanks for settling that dennis. i thought you'd said he did name that char. after you but you could've just been fooling around. i can be stupid sometimes.

Wow. You learn something new everyday.
I became a writer because I fucking suck at math. But turns out 2+2 does in fact equal four. Who the fuck knew?
It's on page 176. "No, Dennis, no. I don't want this, Dennis. Don't. No. You can't have me.
"And I say, 'My name is Victor.'"
Fuck yeah! That's fucking awesome!
Yes, it is will. That is why we are all Chuck fans. Everything in his books does that for us, at least some where in them.
Q.
What b/c means?

It Does Not Matter
"because," I think.
It better be. I've gotten pieces back for editing, and that's what I always thought it meant.
Shit, I'm fucked if it doesnt!
yeah that's what i've always used it for.

Denny gave more to the book then any other character. He provided Victor with something to latch on to. Salvation through rock building. excellent character.

I think its interesting how at the beginning of the book Denny looks up to Victor, and Victor looks out for Denny's well-being (i.e. guarding him in the stocks etc.)
But at the end of the book, Denny turns out to be the more stable character. He represents almost a parent to Victor because he's dating the stripper (whose name eludes me) and the two of them seem to look at Victor like this mischeivous child they have. Then at the end it seems like a homecoming for Victor as he returns to Mom and Dad after losing almost everything else.
Anyone else get that?
"Do you have 846 pounds of zinc? I don't!" -- The Laz.
"I was almost Six On Tha Dot. What a mistake that would have been." -- Six On The Dot
I love the idea Denny had about having something to show for everyday. So in the end it's not all worthless time
temptation's wings got me pale
It might be interesting to note that at the conference in Edinboro this year, Palahniuk said that out of all the characters he'd written, Denny was his favorite. Or was it the character he identified with the most...?
byee
andy
he said it was his favorite character and told a sad story of a big guy that wasn't too smart but had that enlightened not-too-smart that died. This is who Denny is named after.
bite me
Denny is rad. I admire and respect this guy.
Don't be a dick.
Benicio Del Toro. Johnny Knoxville.
from the beginning of the book, I pictured Victor and Denny as Matt Stone & Trey Parker. the creators of South Park. I get them confused sometimes, so...I imagined Denny as the red head, afro sporting one, and Victor as the other one. Matt Stone, I think.

Denny, to me, was great as an exageration of any average man. Hell he was a big part of what made the book so damn good.
