Hey, what's up. This is the first choke post. A SMALL step for man. I think Choke is Chuck's best book because it's the funniest, never a dull moment. I read it in one sitting.
Chuck said it's being optioned so it looks like Choke will be the next Palahniuk Film.

David Lynch, the greatest filmmaker of all time, was asked to submit a model cow for the NEW YORK COW FESTIVAL. It was denied. You be the judge:

I totally agree! "Choke" was the first book in my Chuck Palahniuk collection... I'm only missing "Lullaby". Actually, I stumbled upon it by accident, or was it destiny? Anyway, I was on the P - Fiction section and I saw "Fight Club" on the shelf. Having seen the movie, I decided I'd take a shot at "Choke" and boy was it a great decision! I sure hope they turn "Choke into a movie... I see John Cusack as Victor Mancini, and Jack Black as Victor's buddy, anyway that's just me!

Choke also had the best twist ending. With the nurse/psycho and
all. Totally wasn't expecting it.
I like John Cusack and Jack Black, but they should never be in a
Palahniuk film. They'd be so out of place. It'd be great to see
Chuck play Victor, I think Chuck could be any of his heros in films.

Choke is my fave CP book too. Best story, an ending I'm still trying to decide how I'm going to interpret, humor...you name it. One of these days when I get caught up reading the pile of "to be read" books in my bedroom, I have to go back and give Choke the second reading it deserves - and catch all the things I no doubt missed the first time.

hmmm...i don't know. i loved that whole analysis of the line between insane and sane in the finale of the book, and how it doesn't really exist. i must've been going too fast the first time i read it, but i missed a lot of stuff, but the second time through it really clicked for me. definately chuck's best book.

Because we are all different, we will always have different opinions about this or that subject. To me, Invisible Monsters had the best ending(s), Survivor's ending was cool too! I don't know what to say about Choke's ending. I guess to me it meant that no matter how f*cked up your life is, you can always change it. Choke also clicked to me 'cause Victor was raised by a single-mother. I like a part in the book where Victor says something like this: "In a way you're married to your mother; it's not like you can divorce her! The rest of the women will never be but a mistress to you." By the way, I'm a guy and I was raised by a single-mother, so I can totally relate to that.

I agree that Choke is awesome. The ending was awesome. But I don't think it would make a great movie. Fight Club was a great movie, but it had a plot, and a real climax, and superstar actors.

What would Choke have? Whom would it appeal to in movie form? It just builds up to the end, no buildings collapse, nothing like that. It's inspiring in a book, but in a movie, it's like, "I paid 9 bucks for that?"

Choke is my favorite book I've ever read. The chapter with the chestnuts was indeed awesome. You never suffer unless you want to. And that can be applied to anything: you only laugh if you want to. You only cry if you want to. You only feel embarassed if you want to. And it's always your choice.

What I took away after reading Choke is that, no matter HOW you feel, that's your choice. When you're in a new place, if you feel alone and isolated, then that's your own fault. Because you always have the power to go out and do something about your life. Doing anything else is "jerking yourself off".

And I like how Choke paralleled Chuck's writing. He thought he was just tearing things down and pointing out what's wrong with everything in his books. Like Ida says, she spent her life tearing things down, and never built anything of her own... except her son. And the book, even though it DOES point out what's wrong with a lot of things, a major theme is definitely forgetting the past, and defining the future.

"Even after all that rushing around, where we've ended up is the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night."

It's like, your past is over. No matter what happened, it's over. You can't feel bad about fucking up your past. Because then you'll just miss the present. If you failed in everything in life, NOW you get the chance to start over. Always.

"Where we're standing right now, in the ruins in the dark, what we build could be anything."

I agree with Well, but let's break this up in parts, shall we?
Ok, Fight Club was a huge success because (in my opinion):
1) Brad Pitt was in it (See also: world-renowned actor); major turn-on for some, devastating for others.
2) The themes were relatively new and in-your-face. Most people went to see it because they thought it was an action-packed movie; some of us got more than that.
3) Edward Norton, while not "world-renouwned", was also a major factor. Some people remembered him from "Primal Fear" & "The people vs. Larry Flynt" and thought: "Hey, it's that crazy guy from that movie!".
4) The whole plot by itself was great!

I do believe Choke has enough to make it to the silver screen, but I also think most people would miss the whole "anti-hero" theme... simply 'cause some people are just stupid! Maybe some people went "yeah, that movie was kinda weird... but hey, I did like seeing Brad Pitt getting his ass kicked!!" after seeing Fight Club; maybe the rest went way over their heads! Anyway, that's what I think! I also think Survivor should make it to the silver screen... but that's a whole different story!

Fight Club was a huge sucsess because of 3 core things:

1) Based on an amazing story and its characters from CP's book by the same name, although I'm willing to bet most hadn't realized this, so onto 2...
2) David Fincher's visionary genius and understanding being able to visually create the world of CP's work on screen, not to mention the hundreds of people who worked on set in production, and in post production, creating the amazing photo-real and ground breaking visual effects.
3) Great Marketing and a Cast of 2 fresh and young talented actors Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. (Ok 3.5 Tongue)

4, 5, 6, and friggin' on and on include things like "word of mouth" adverstising, cuase I know after I saw it I told everyone to go see it! Girls love Brad Pitt so they go see it, and Norton pulls his share to... Not to mention a generation who can directly relate to many of the films messages and realizations... the reasons and levels of interest are layered deep.

Ohh and I apologize this is Choke's forum, all CP's book could be brought to the big screen with sucsess and with the right people, the story and characters are there, and all stories don't have to have the basic outline of conflict, climax, resolution, as choke has them, maybe not as climatic as Fight Club but it isnt a nessesity, Choke has enough ups and downs and realizations to hold an audience and I'd be happy to throw down my 9 bucks! ok 15 bucks when its released! Smile Big

(ps - shhhh but Survivor is his best book Tongue)

The way chuck happened for me was my cousin told me about fight club the movie, I watched it 20 + times until i got off my ass and decided to get the book. When i went to chapters they were sold out so I got choke, trust me, i was not disapointed.

btw, i would rather have Survivor been a movie rather than choke, Survivor is sort of.... more written for the silver screen

Actually, technically, FC was a box office failure*. Which we all know has nothing to do with the quality of a film, so please don't flame me.

*low ticket sales - mostly, I'm thinking, due to the way it was marketed; I didn't go see it. I saw the previews & thought "A movie starring a pretty-boy about macho violence. Nope." Who knew?

Seems to me it is taking less and less courage every day. Thanks to 'Reality TV' and digicams. Last night I watched - only somewhat revulsed - as a woman ate a horse's rectum before millions of home viewers for cash money. And anyone, it seems, can be a pornstar these days.

Just an observation.

Brock, you're in Texas, right? Say, "ass". Unless you're originally from the Commonwealth, "arse" is just pretentious.

Brock,

I assure you that I had no intention of hurting your feelings. Next time I will choose my words more carefully. Ad hominem attacks - even in jest - are just bad form.

As to our discussion of your observations on 'Choke' (which is what we are discussing,) you said:

Quote:
"I happen to flip past the whole 'monkey-chestnuts' thing, and what strikes me is just how true that whole first internet porn chapter is... I mean, it's like this, just like Mancini mentions, it takes courage and no sense of shame to show the ugly side of ourselves... every little thing that we are embarassed about or afraid to admit to anyone, our dark side, our insecurities, everything we hide away in our own private storage... and well, got me thinking how monkey-chestnuts can be applied to everything in life..."
I say, "I disagree". I stand by that whether you, 'Victor Mancini', or Chuck P. says it.

The key here is this: Does it, in fact, take courage to expose yourself (physically or metaphorically) before the world? I say, "Not so much anymore. Less and less every day."

:::We are evolving. And letting the chips fall where they may.:::

Is this necessarily a bad thing? No. It's not necessarily a good thing, either. It just is. Our recent evolution as a species is seeing 'shame' go the way of the butter churn. I'd like to see some better results of this than "Fear Factor" and Do-It-Yourself Digital Porn Factories in every 14 year-old's bedroom. There has to be something more useful, right? Something noble and bold? Hell, maybe not, but I'll keep hoping.

When you reply to someone thats pissing you off, don't be sarcastic. Don't say things like "Thanks a lot." Or "You're really a good person." Or "Thanks for helping us all out here asshole."

You can't say thanks, or tell them they're a good person, or anything positive, no matter how sarcastic you are. He/she knows you're sarcastic, you know you're sarcastic, but my advice is just to avoid it all together. It helps, no matter how insignificant it might seem to you, trust me.

Most people don't realize it, but it really detracts from how the person perceives what you're saying.

Any clue on who will be directing "Choke"? (if it ever actually gets the greenlight). I loved the idea of Aronofsky! ("Pi" was amazing, and "Requiem..." is one of my favorite films). If not him, what about Sam Mendes ("American Beauty"), or perhaps a more unusual director like Paul Thomas Anderson?

I would never do that. For one reason: From then on, whenever I read it Choke, it would remind me of getting semen all over my self. I like to think about the charecters, not a creamy white substance. But, hey, I could be wrong. That's just me. Do what you want, man.

Your semen is creamy? Dude, for real. You might want to get a Doctor to look at that. I mean, creamy? There's about a million descriptive words for jism in the world that one could use, but I so don't think "creamy" should be one of them.

Like the filling in a Twinkie? Man, if I was a woman I wouldn't want to watch you climax.

Nor would I if I were a man. Wink Oh, who am I kidding? I would. But only because I like watching all sorts of things. Love!
