Give Me Denial (*Spoilers*)
Well, like i promised you Jane, id finish this before the end of the long weekend.
Like in my previous thread, i knew this was Chucks strongest piece of work about 3 chapters in, and post-ending-- i feel even more strongly about it.
In the 4 main books ( IM, FC, Choke, Survivor ) are what i think essentially the 'How To Guide To Change Your Life' quadrilogy... and Shannon
jump to Daisy St. Patience
jump to Kay MacIsaac
is really the most courageous character he has written.
with the commitment to, well, the decision to ( SPOILER AHEAD ) blow your own jaw off, she essentially made sure this was something she couldnt come back from.
and i mean, plastic surgery was an option, but that was the vice of temptation, the only thing that really could send her back, to maybe being beautiful.... ok, im rambling. what i mean is, i admire the committment and the courage.
the transgenderal twists didnt so much surprise me as Manus' involvement in Shane & Shannons life so early.
i dont know what else to say.
im pretty overwhelmed by this piece.
please, discuss?

My big thing was, I couldn't ever understand what kind of idiot would throw a hairspray bottle into a trashfire. I live in the country. There are certain things, like aeresol cans, that you do not throw in a trashfire.
But other than that, I love this book. Love love love. This was the second one of Chuck's books that I ever read, and it was a sure bet after that that I was addicted. Shannon is by far, in modern literature, my favorite female character. She has such incredible strength. She allows herself to be led at all the right times, without ever really being out of control. It's been a while since I read it, and I've only read it once, but it had so many incredible twists, it was definitely the kind of book where you were still in the book when you weren't reading it.
Um, that's all I can really think of right now. Bedtime.
There is hope, but not for us.
yeah Glamhoth, i thought the Miss Rona vs Exploding Boobs thing was a bit.... im thinking 'cop out'? but then upon reading further-- the whole sacrifice of Shannon giving up her life, her identity, totally blew me away. So it made up for it easily.

I have to say the reason why shannon shot of her own jaw and how plastic surgery is seen as temtptation is a great/twisted view on things and i love it. I love CHUCKP!
i dont think youll find any of use disagree with that statement.

EDITED
yea more and more i think of that, and it really is amazing, but it just bothered me and bothered me that she lived through the gunshot, it's just this little tic that shouldnt but did (to me) marr the book, other than that I thought it was great too and cant find any real fault in it, but i don't know, it just bothered me and still does.
i can see how someone can be bothered by it, it was a totally unselfish act of love.
pretty fucking hardcore.
no one is honest anymore.

no i meant her not dying, sorry for being unclear
yeah, but like i said before, the slight cheesiness of that, was more than made up for by the real Shannon's actions.

Yup (*SPOILERS* - Chapter Thirty):
And I Did Not Make That Hairspray Can Explode.
Brandy says, "I know. I did it. I was so miserable being a normal average child. I wanted something to save me. I wanted the opposite of a miracle."
I dont think the Ms Ronna book was a cop out. It was well thought out. how Berandy andmired the character for putting herself 'out there.' Like that quote she mentions spilling yourself out, then sewing yourself shut after putting your lifes story out there.
Much like her bleeding out, due to Evies gun shot, and then going over her life story with Shannon. Then being sewed up, and starting a new life, one she doesnt want. But will be wiser, because of it.
-honestly I just finished reading it today, so im still open to suggestion. I can see why it could be a "cop out" but i just dont feel like it is. Besides Brandy's big tits were always bothering her, at the end she can choose any size boobs she wants.
Word to Wesley
i love that chick on your Avatar, loved her in Kids and Trees Lounge.
this was a great book. My only complaint was shane (SPOILER AHEAD) surviving the gun shot. I understand why it was done, and less and less it bothers me but I just thought it was almost a cop out ending. Stll the rest of the book was great and I did indeed think it was amazing her doing what she did.
that ending [ive read the book 3 times] gives me chill bumps each time...
completley and totally, permanantly and without hope, forever and ever I love Brandy Alexander. And that's enough.
"all God does is watch us then kill us when we're boring. we must never, ever be boring."
brandy surviving the gun shot was just a big deception for me, i dont mean i hated brandy or wanted her to dye, but it was just so cheesy!
anyway, what i still dont get is why did shannon decide to give her identity to shane, if she knew he hated being a woman????
Namer of a thousand names, maker of meanings, transformer of the world, your parents and the parents of your parents continue in you.
he may have hated being a woman but he still did it, he still tried to be glamourous and now he is 'shannon-fucking-macfarland'.
i think that brandy not dying made for a beautiful ending to a great story.

i think i almost cried at that point. i was just like. WOAH.
its so moving because Shannon used to say how she wanted Brandy Alexander dead, and it isn't clear if this is her epiphany or if she felt this all along, but either way its marvelous.
I thought Shane said he did it on purpose?
My favorite line is still "birds ate my face". How Morbid.
I have one question, which I must have passed over while reading. I believe I didn't realise Seth, Ellis, etc. was Manus until the end of the book. Which does make sense, when you think back to how Shannon was in love with him, but wanted to destroy him with all of those drugs because he cheated on her, and didn't love her anymore. But did she know she was traveling cross country with Manus? Why would she want to travel with him if she knew he was Manus? Did I miss something?
