I know this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it anywhere. If Tyler is such an anti-consumerist and claims that, "you are not your clothes," why does he dress with so much style? The only thing I noticed about the way he dresses is that it seems as if he doesn't match, but still dresses with style.

not a valid argument. you can be anti-consumerism but still have impeccable fashion sense, if you are diligent enough, you can find good clothes outside traditional means. upscale brand name clothes do not necessarily make you have good dress style. for some people, both are mutually exclusive.

That one line seems to indicate something pretty obvious. I agree with Damien, though I also believe that it's possible for Tyler's sense of fashion to be a manifestation of The Narrator's own ikea nesting instinct.
