Personally, I watched the movie a million times before I got to read the book.

I was wondering, what is it like to read the book without having seen the movie.
Is it still that good?
Or better?
How does the movie then look like?

...but I haven't watched the movie yet.
I'll let you know when I see it

It's always better to read a book before seeing the film version of it. This way you form your own visions of things (i.e. what a character looks like). The other way, you end up using the film's pictures to create your vision of the book, and as the book started things, it's best to read it first.

Incidentally, that goes for any book, whether it be Palahniuk or any author. Unfortunately, I saw the 70's version of Salem's Lot long before I read it, so when I got the book, I kept saying, "Hey, that didn't happen in the movie!" Really tainted things for me.

This is awesome! I finally found another person who didn't get into CP because of the movie!

wow, that's great! Wink
Personally I don't remember how I got into Chuck...maybe I just read the plot of Invisible Monsters in a library and dedided to buy it...and it seemed so beautiful and brilliant to me that after reading it I immediately bought Chocke...and then Lullaby, Survivor, Fight Club and Portland Souvenir!
What about you? how did you get into Chuck?

I was at my cousin's house on vacation a year ago and couldn't sleep. So I started reading Choke. I was hooked, immediately.

I was kind of stuck in a limbo. I read the book first, but the one with the movie cover, so I kept seeing Brad Pitt and Edward Norton in my head. But since there was no picture of Carter, I had another idea of Marla. But anyways, I always have to read the book first or it drives me over the edge if I don't. I need to use my imagination once in a while.

I agree that it's better to read the book first, but then I'm usually really disappointed by the movie. I read two of my favourite books after I saw the movie (Fight Club and A Clockwork Orange), and in both cases I was blown away by the book after seeing the movie.

It may be better to see the movie first, just because at least in the case of Fight Club I thoroughly enjoyed the movie AND the book. Had I read Fight Club first then the movie may have disappointed me (I really can't see that happening, but I can't be sure). I really hate when they have to change things or leave things out from book to movie. I mean, the Harry Potter movies are cinematically wonderful, but if you've read the book first then they're a huge fucking disappointment. At least they always are for me.

And this is random, but how odd is it that my friend at U of A is studying Harry Potter in her English class? It's cool and understandable, but still very strange.

yeah. the movies are always disappointments. to me, because they cut so much shit out. i actuall heard they were going to make the Goblet of Fire movie into two parts and I got really excited. but then the director or producer or whoever decides that shit chose not to. I can't even begin to imagine how they'll slaughter Order of The Phoenix. It's so long compared to her books 'cause the font size is smaller and she covers up most of the page and it's also like 100 pages longer than her last. but you know that.
as for the H.P. in class, back in High School some teachers gave the option of reading H.P. books as summer reading for a SENIOR class. but in a university? that's just crazy.

Personally I preser to watch the movie first otherwise the movie is no good, but the book will always have details that will keep me hooked. Yeah the HP movies blow.

I saw the movie first then read the book and it was kinda confusing. But I did read One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest then saw the movie and it was great to see the images come to life on the TV.

I saw the HP movies before they read them (well, the first two anyway) and when I went back and read them, they were a little better, but then when the third movie came out, well, for the FIRST TIME EVER IN MY ENTIRE LIFE I felt like writing a letter to tell somebody how horrible of a job they did, I hardly even want to see the next movie. But the books fuckin rock!

I watched the movie, then read the book. And i haven't been able to watch the movie since. The movie is no where near as good as the book.

I actually saw Fight Club before I read the book, but instantly i was hooked.

BAM

i was all about the ideas of the movie, it just really hit me as WOW, im a 16 year old shit who didnt no crap till now. Really woke me up. And than i read the book, and it became an addiction. For me, the movie is soo well-done it doesnt matter if you read fight club first or watch it first, both are very good. This is very rare for most books turned to films.

i dont know,

the movie fear and loathing in las vegas ruined the book for me.

well i shouldnt say the movie so much as the quotes that are used as samples in every industrial song "we had two bags of grass...."
"and remmeber never turn your back on a drug, especially when its waving a razor sharp hunting knife in your face"

i would get songs stuck in my head every quote that clicked, and inbetween that i had johnny depps voice stuck in my head narrorating the whole damn thing

BUT!

in the case of american psycho (what a terrible fucking movie) i had no trouble creating everything in my head due to how much of a shitty whack job wanna be cinemax softcore porn quality piece of shit the movie it was

the movie doesnt touch on shit that the book does.

gah i hate posting underneath my self, but yeah

i just started reading the book finally and everyone should read it first,

marla is interesting in the movie, but never really gets that much attention, in the book she is so much more fucking crazy in the "i want you to fuck me, get me pregnant so i can have your abortion" kinda way.

and some reason when i watch the movie i dont make the connection that the fight club is just another form of self help group.

well part of,
project mayhem being the second half.
