No distractions/Self destruction?
I have a question about Tyler's phylosophy,
In the book/film Tyler gets some guy outside a store, holds a gun to his head and tell him if he's not on his way to becoming a vet in six weeks, or something, he will be dead. Then he goes on about having no fear and no distractions, "the ability to let that which does not matter truly slide".
I completely agree with this and I try to live my life by these rules.
However, when he's poring lye over jacks hand he tells him "It's only after we have lost everything are we free to do anything", refering to self destruction and hitting rock bottom.
Does anyone see the contradiction? How is it possible to try and lose everything whilst at the same time trying to achieve your goals????
Help me.
Raymond K. Hessel had different goals than Tyler/Jack/Joe did. He didn't want anarchy and the things Jack really wanted. He wanted to be a vet, but he was a poor convenience store worker. Tyler almost took what little Raymond had from him, his life, so he was free to go about doing what he wanted.
Jack/Joe, however, wanted anarchy and freedom from the materialistic society. He was looking for ambition to destroy the system, not join it. He was already a part of it. For that, he needed to give up everything (either himself, or through his alter identity, Tyler) so that he's free to do what he wants.
It isn't contradictory, both of them sort of lost things in order to do what they wanted. They each had different goals, though.
I am the ghost that haunts my dreams. It's pathetic, really, to be the monster of my own nightmares. Next to you is the only time I feel safe...

Tyler was a business man. He created his company with space monkeys to become financially free. Yeah, He did make money. But he speend it in other ways then jack did.
If you watch the film in this context you'll find several things that back this up. He searched a way to make money with out working.
IRONMAN is friend of the evil.

Yeah that makes sence, so if your ambition was to be docter there would be no point trying to completely cut yourself off from the system.

Was he trying to make money or just crash big business? Or looking for corporate sponsorship of FC?
Great post Rainbowlamb.
If it's not consensual, it's not moral. Ever.
