Just asking
As a way of life, Just after reading Fight club, What are you supporting just for your own opinion?:
-*self-improvement, or as is fight club "masturbation"? By that i mean the whole trying to make yourself feel better and stuff, just what the support group are about. Most people like their life this way.
-*Or self-destruction, Tylers way :ninja: - You've read fight club, you know what i mean..
Now, If this topic already exist, or any of these stuff, just lock and close it right away.
Happy to read your posts.
I've always thought the best way is a nice mixture of those two ideals
Anarcyth, I kind of think it's a bit like a Zen Koan. It sounds really good, but in the end, may not mean a whole heck of a lot.
There is of course the meaning you imbue it with, which yes, is important. But, really. Aren't they the same thing? Self-improvement and self-destruction, I mean.
Because, every time you truly improve some part of yourself, aren't you by the very nature of doing so, destroying the older version of who you are?
That's what I think, at least now. But that might change. It usually does
.
Willtupper, i agree a the both things are probably the same, because you "destruct" yourself to improve your life in some way, even though it looks like the exact opposite of self improvement...
But in the really deeper meaning of it, i think it does say something. I think when you act in intent to destruct yourself (or "hit bottom") you should probably have a purpose, a goal or even a plan or place you want to get to eventually. I find it a tittle childish. Maybe it's not. We can never know :amish:.

I guess that's kind of my way too... But doesn't it feel a little like a betrayal in both sides?
It's the idea that self-improvement as we see it is not an actual improvement, it is holding the door with material accumulation. Self destruction, to remove that which does not matter, is to clear ourselves for what we do need, real, but not yet actualized self-improvement. Fight Club is a way to get back to nature. By resorting to primitive methods of dealing with problems, we realize what in life is and is not worth fighting for.
"They sold you hippies grunge, hip hop, now liberty activism."
It is less about the intangible, and more about the tangible.

My indirect answer to that question, is that I understand, and even support the idea of self-destruction as a means of self-building, however I'm also under the impression that one is also "destroyed" every day by something outside of one's control. Letting life be the one that hits you and hurts you, and then healing from that, so to speak. It's the same idea, only it's a lot more harmonious with reality.
My direct answer: "Tyler" went to support groups and then went crazy. This doesn't speak well for either system of thought...
