Jack vs. Joe
I just want to know why everyone refers to the narrator in fight club as "jack" despite when they are talking about the book. Chuck repeatedly uses the name "joe" to describe him or how he feels. Ex. p 59 "I am Joe's Inflamed Flaring Nostrils." and likewise. I realize that when the book was adapted to the movie the guy changed the name from joe to jack but common, this is chuckpalahniuk.net not jimuhls.net, have some respect for the name he chose.

also, it's not like it's a name he "chose." It's from actual Reader's Digest articles.
his name is robert paulson
I was wondering why everyone kept calling him Jack too. Joe is the name in the book, no doubt about it. and even if its not his real name, neither is jack. Joe is from the book, the better of the two media.
Dude, I forgot about this. This was like one of my first posts and I think my first thread. Ah it seems like nearly months ago.

I call him Narrator for obvious reasons but i guess i can understand why someone would call him Jack, from my point of view anyways, because (if they're like me) they have probably watched the movie far more times than they have read the book, so Jack is more natural to them than Joe.
Plus, for example, when the book came out I was 9 and when the movie came out I was 12. At the time of the movie I was young and I was dealing with difficult times that caused me to not actually pay attention to the movie and I didn't get into it until I was about 15. Of course I got into it, loved it, got obsessed with it and eventually found out it was a book. By the time I bought/read the book I was probably 17 and by that time had already pretty much memorized the movie.
Yes the book is the better of the two but in cases like that, I can see why someone would be more apt to refer to the name in the movie rather than book.

I think it's mostly just a habit from having seen the film more recently then the last reading of the book. I don't see what the big deal is either way. Neither one is the narrator's actual name.
