So I was talking today with a rather smart friend, and we started talking about global warming and the future of the planet.

And it got me thinking about things related to my personal life, my goals and whatnot. Maybe this doesn't make sense, but I feel more... free to do the things that I want to, thinking that the world (or at least, people) won't be here for too much longer.

I mean, the fact that I'm crap and trash doesn't motivate me all that much (I kind of realized this after our discussion), because I already KNOW all that, you know? I know that my being here doesn't matter all that much. I mean, at all.

But the thing the WORLD as we know it won't be here... I'm not sure I'm explaining it all that great, but the thought that no one will be here in not too long just seems a hell of a lot more liberating than just thinking, well, fuck. I'm not here for much longer.

It's like, who cares? But the thought of people as a whole (so no one to judge what I do, which is an issue I'm sure I still cling to) not being here just makes me feel so much freer.

Does that make sense? Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Ya dude. Global Warming sucks. I don't drive, so it's not my fault.

Thanks. Killer insight. Really. But, I was actually kind of looking at Global Warming as a good thing.

I mean, if no one will be here to judge my actions, no one I respect, no one I care about - totally and completely, absolutely no one - than doesn't that make me free to be whoever I want to be? Do whatever I want to do?

And, like I said, I KNOW that I'm total crap and trash. No news there. But, I was thinking that maybe my low (and accurate!) regard for myself - in relation to other people, some of whom I respect - might have been something that's been holding me back.

Like, I can't go TOO high in what I want to do. Because what will the "real" people of talent and virtue in the field (or fields) that I'm interested in think?

Wouldn't I - who sucks ass - be a total phony? Completely unworthy?

As much as I hate it sometimes, I STILL care what some people think.

And this talk about Global Warming just got me reevaluating that.

I guess I always knew that I would die someday. But somewhere I think I figured that all these other people would keep on going.

And that mattered to me. Now, I am trying to think otherwise Smile.

I think we all have an instinctual drive for survival and procreation.

even if you know it doesn't matter i think it would be hard to be completely free from the idea of spreading your seed and trying to leave an important stamp on this creature habitant planet which ultimately will just lead you down a path and make you no different than the rest of the glass half full parenting community.

I want to fight it but even now at the age of 24 my dreams of traveling the world as a professional scuba diver are fading away at the looming future of being a design engineer and just raising a family instead.

Well, you are right, will. Global Warming is looming. Look at the violent storms in the summer and winter we are having all over the world! I suppose if no one was around, I would be doing all I could and want to do too. I hope that global warming does get stopped though. I mean, it may free you, if you survive, but what about all the millions of people that would die? I think we need to take care of global warming fast and not just think of ourselves and freedom. I'm really not trying to down play what you think will, but that's what I think.

It's possible that global warming isn't even happening. Think of it this way: the stock market average can go up several days in a row in the process of crashing. The fact that it's ten points higher today doesn't make up for 300 points over a longer term. You're talking about a planet that's been here for billions of years, and we've measured the temperature first hand for a few hundred years tops.

Plus, if it is happening, it might just be part of a secular change in climate that's independent of man's activities. Maybe the big warm up getting ready for a big ice age. Thirty years ago, that was the panic, a new Ice Age, and the blame went to the same pollution that's supposedly cooking our collective goose today.

And it's also possible that global warming is happening and due to industrialization and still benign or beneficial. More C02 in the atmosphere would support more green biomass, which would support more people. Some areas that have been wet might get dry, but some areas that have been dry might get wet, too. There's even a possible buffering effect where you get greater cloud cover that slows the warming at some point.

The Greening Earth Society (which is probably a front for Big Coal, but which is composed of actual scientists who dissent from the global warming panic) even puts out some cheesy videos on the subject.

And while the GES might have an backing from people with ulterior motives, don't forget the other side might have backing as well. The Montreal Protocol was moved up five years by the first Pres Bush after a huge check was given to the GOP by DuPont. DuPont had a patent on a CFC replacement, stood to clean up on a freon ban.

Or how about the world cools and the world heats. Global warming happens. It's just that, warming. It will happen again give it 1500 years.

I just read that Mars Jupiter and Pluto are showing signs of Global Warming too. Damn, we're screwing up the whole solar system! And we only sent a couple of SUV's to Mars.

Let's start a global porning club. We'd have more support overnight than this stupid political agenda anyway. And it'd be way more fun to talk about.

Stupid political agenda? You probably think the universe started 2000 years ago.

I really don't think the earth is going to end any time soon, but that doesn't mean global warming shouldn't be taken seriously ... or at a minimum that humans need to seriously consider the impact of their actions on the planet.

And I know what you mean Will. There is something about impermanence that is freeing.

2000 years ago? Nice try.... but no. I'm not that easy to pigeon-hole, but you get an 'E' for effort.

Oh and BTW, I'm burning a pile of tires and Styrofoam tonight just for you. Take that, ozone layer!
