ending of book/movie
well in the book. true. but in the movie the gunshot killed him. and he was alive in "jack's"/"joe's" mind. alive to the point were "jack"/"joe" couldn't control him. it just confused me and it would be nice to finally understand how it happened.
To put it simply, Tyler was a fingment of Jack's (narrator) imagination. In his mind Tyler died because he took a bullet to the head, even though it came out Jack's cheek. Jack had total control of his imagination and because of that he chose Tyler to die.

I dont think his name is Jack or Joe, I remember reading in the book about the magazines in the house about the 1st person organs. Thats where I believe the narrator got it from (ex. I am Joe's Colon) and it kind of just stuck with him the rest of the journey.
As for Tyler dieing, Tyler was the state of mind in which the narrator wanted to be (the flashes of Tyler in the begining of the movie). Tyler was never really alive as Giggan said, he was just the person he wanted to be. And in the end he found that is not the lifestyle for him.

we know his name is not jack or joe, thats just the name that people attributed to him because of all the repetition, i am jack/joe's..., its easier than having to write "the narrator"

Wait. TYLER WASN'T REAL‽‽‽‽
Tyler was real in a sense, he was an extension of the main character. He realizes however that all of project mayhem and fight club itself has to be shut down. He does this by taking down their leader, his alter ego. he in the end ends up in the psyche ward of the place he calls heaven, but in reality it is no heaven and for him there is no god. But he still has his followers, the space monkeys.
