New Portrait
Update:
Here is the finished piece, which will be added to the Fan Submissions section with the next art update. I am adding it here because according to Dennis, the next art update probably won't be until January. Thanks again for all of your previous comments, they are much appreciated!

"Chuck" October 7, 2007
pastel on paper
9 x 11"
Oringinal:
I just mostly finished this portrait of Chuck a few minutes ago. There are still a few minor details to tweek, but not much I don't think. I will post it to the other Fan Submissions after I get a chance to get a good photo during the day with a tripod and all that fanciness.

The colors are a bit off because of the lighting, but its pretty close.

Thanks, but I like to consider myself a hero everyday. You should too. And its not a lame reason like because I work for the police. No, its just because I'm that damn rad.
Awes!
I know that's understating things a little.
only because you forgot the second half of the word.

acular and ificent!
For serious. I'm always really impressed with the way painters do shadowing. It's my favorite part of a work, this included...

-LaJessica
that is insanely good. how long does a portrait like that take you to do?
I think that one was about 12 hours.
usually I work a bit larger and do a full bust, so I spend about 15-20 on one.
Also, I am a perfectionist, so I've been known to spend 30+ hours on one piece, even more in other media.

Actually, its sad, but most of the folks I went to school with have very little appretiation/respect for representational art. Everyone wanted to do the next new cool super innovative never been done before thing, which is, of course, impossible.

Yeah, the art-school world is definitely lined up against representational work. One of the texts that I have to teach from refers to representational art as "Imitationalism." How's that for bias?

1) [RANT] Are you serious?! I could understand if it said, "and imitation of life," i guess... but that definition just means that all of the old masters are only masters of imitation and nothing more. I can't stand it when young artists think that they don't need to learn how to draw from life because they paint abstractly or whatever reason; most painting and drawing professors will tell you that in order to create any type of art, and understanding of traditional painting and drawing is necessary. I could go on forever about this, but I won't. [/RANT]
2) What book is this?
3) You should find another book.

It's the newest edition of ArtTalk. The high-school art text that our system just adopted. With a name like that, I'm sure you can tell that the book is shit. In theory, they are saying that representational work is "imitating life and objects from the real world." But still, it's not hard to pick up the underlying condescension.
I actually work primarily in an abstract format. But, unlike a lot of my peers, I also have a great appreciation for representational work, especially work that deals with the human figure. Ingres, Sargent, Schiele, and Klimt are some of my big faves. And I agree that it is impossible to do good abstraction without also possessing the ability to work with form, structure, and optical color.

I suppose, in context, that the word "imitating" isn't all that bad, but yes, the underlying condescension is obvious.
I enjoy hearing that abstract artists appreciate representational work, it got so sick of the stubborn students in school who thought they were above it. And the discussions in art history classes about whether or not portraiture is a valid art form, blah blah blah. Some many people these days only appreciate the "meaning" of a work and have little appreciation for rendering and technique. I dealt with a lot of that, considering 99% of my work is focused on the human form. You named some great artists, Sargent is probably one of my top five, but I am more partial to the old masters, especially Rubens.

Damn, if there was a button to push for 'more than admire,' I'd push it for you.
I make my living as a supposed 'production' artist (aka 'graphic designer' aka 'typsetter'), which is supposedly in the graphic arts. But I can't draw a stick figure. That is awesome, I wish I could do that.

Fantastic job, very cool. Thanks for sharing, impressive.

Your birds are liars.

You paint (pastel?) beautifully. If I could draw an ear like that, I'd probably say it was the best thing I’d ever done in my life artwise. I would laminate it and whip it out to *wow* people when the conversation got slow.
“Yeah, congratulations on the baby! But who cares? Look at this ear! I know. It’s gorgeous, but what can I say? I’m talented.”
You should TOTALLY do that ^
Fine work there.
What are you going to do with the actual piece?
really nice des, i outta do a picture of that bitch but i'm trying to break outta the celebrity portraiture rut i've been in.
You should do one of him sitting on the toilet reading Vanity Fair or something.

I'm not sure... I doubt there is anyone around here that would want to buy it. I was thinking of maybe putting it on ebay, but I don't know if anyone is fanatical enough to pay what I would like for it. So, I guess it will just end up in the stack of work I have that I will never get around to selling.
