more importantly anyone know if i can publish a shortstory then later come back and put that short story into a book and publish that?

I'm no super expert, but here's what I know.
1. try pw.org. they have listings for contests and publishers looking to publish everything from short atories and poems to novels.
also, go to your local library and find a book called "Writer's Market 2006" This is a book of basically all publishers and agents, contests, etc.
The last thing you can try is sending your manuscript out. You can try figuring out who publishes books that you like the most and then look online for someone to send your stuff to. Let's say you really like Diary. You find it's by Anchor Books. Then, you look through the author acknowledgements. Oftentimes the editor will be thanked in the acknowledgements page. So then what you do is google "anchor books" along with each of the names in the acknowledgements. You might get lucky and come up with a hit, and you can go ahead and try sending your manuscript. t's a ballsy move, and some people won't go for it, but it's worth a shot.

2. as far as reprinting stuff that appears in magazines, it depends on the publictation. If you try to get your stuff published ask the magazine about what their policies are first.
