whose read chuck books in different languages ?

I've only read Fight Club and Diary in Romanian, but they're very badly translated, I fully understood Chuck once I read the other books in English.

My ex is majoring in French. She was looking to buy a couple of Chuck's books in French because she knows he's a pretty easy read regardless. I don't think she has yet. But if she does - I'll report back here.

How did they come up with the list?

Art Spiegelman is the only one that has a list on there. And there are 60 books on his list. That just seems a little ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if that website just guessed...

I'm assuming Pygmy doesn't count?

i have a friend whose from romania. she speaks five languages, but she doesnt read chuck

thanks for the imput, though. the grammar and pop references are very american and i would assume would kill any translation. except maybe french, somewhat.

I have read chuck Books in spanish and they're are not quite good.
Just to give an example. They translate the Word " mommy" from choke into mamaita and the expression "crybaby" into "nino lloricas".
It takes the seriousness out of the book. Maybe if you are a mexican you can relate more to that kind of translation. Being argentinian its really weird trying to get into the mood of the book that its filled with local expressions.
The only two books that were relatively well translated were, Invisible monsters and diary.
Choke, Haunted, Rant, Snuff, they all suck in their spanish version.
I think that Chuck is one of those untranslatable writers. He has a great style and adaptations sound fake.

i have read most of his books in german first. translations are okay, but i prefer the original english versions.

I've read Fight Club, Diary and Choke in Romanian. Choke was OK-ish, but Diary was awfully translated. Fight Club was somewhere there, in between.

You sure that it wasn't just the way Diary was written?

It's switches POV a lot from 1st to 2nd to 3rd.

As a french, the first time I've read Chuck Palahniuk, it was a french translation of "Survivor". I have to say that the English version really has something that the french one doesn't have.
However, the translator Freddy Michalski made quite a good job on almost every Palahniuk's books.

Freddy Michalski is okay, but he did a bad job on the translation of James Ellroy's novels, especially his last ones.

This reminds me - Franc bought me Fight Club in French about 7 years ago.

I'm going to re-read it, but I doubt I'll be able to tell whether it's a good translation or not as my French is pretty sub par.

As far as I remember, it translated "fight club" (except in the title) as "club de la castagne" (urgh !), but I think I saw it that way before the film's release, when it was prevewed as a film about clandestine boxing between cancer patients.

I am trying to summarize a list of languages into which Chuck´s books have been translated: so far I got Spanish, Czech (well done, Mr. Podaný!), French, Turkish, Rumanian, Portuguese, German (excellent Mr. Schmitz), Japanese...are there also some other "unusual" or not very common languages into which his books have been translated?

I am doing a research for my diploma thesis.

It's Romanian, btw.

I think there will always be a slight difference when translating from one language to another, but as long as the same thought is there the same message will be sent to the readers.
