Let me elaborate further on my statement. I know this kid, he's a complete dickhead, and he's constantly telling me and my bandmates that we'll "never be as good as our idols". Well, fuck that shit. I don't "idolize" anyone, if anything, I consider my favorite musicians in bands like Cryptopsy, Cephalic Carnage, etc, as peers, not idols. Sure, they may be more technically sound as players right now, but that's beside the point. We both do the same thing on slightly different levels, and as such I don't ever find myself in a position of idolizing anyone. With that said, to not listen to music would be to strip myself of valuable input. Instead of worshipping what they do, it's more like I'm analyzing and figuring out what they do well and what they don't do well, so that I can better tailor my music to be as perfect as I can possibly make it instead of being a hodge-podge of substandard ideas. This is the reason that I listen to everything at least once (except shit like 50 Cent, I have honestly never heard "In Da Club" and I'll do my best to make sure I never do). However, I listen to music in a drastically different way than most people do.

ok. i didn't know you and monkey12 had a history. but i do have to say that while i agree with you that the best way to learn to play music is to listen and the best way to learn to write is to read, you can carry it too far. i know sometimes as a writer i use a book i want to finish as a reason not to start something i should work on for myself. that's what i thought music12 was trying to say.

No history between us that I know of. I'm just saying what I feel as a musician. I don't know ANY musicians who thought that it would be a good idea to quit listening to music. Also, monkey said:

Quote:
True, true. I sold my music and DVDs because I was tired of living other people's dreams. I have invested my time into playing music rather than just listening to it. I just feel I should make something of myself, rather than admire someone else doing what I want to do.

Why couldn't one do both? I certainly have no problems with listening or writing. In fact, as of late I've been more productive than I have in quite a long time and I never stopped listening to music. I have music on when I go to sleep/wake up. When I'm in my car. When I'm surfing the internet. While I'm working, I never stop. But remember, like I said, I listen to music in a drastically different way than most people do and find multiple ways to interpret it, in both a literal and spiritual ways.

that's great for you. monkey obviously feels differently. that doesn't make him appalling or ignorant.

Sorry, that first quote, I was saying like:

I know this KID, he's a total dickhead. I was using the kid to describe someone I know with anonymity, I'm sorry if it came off as though I was referring to monkey. Well, that's like someone wanting to be a movie maker but not watching films. Like someone wanting to write a book but never reading any. It's a horrible idea for one simple reason; it's going to make it so easy to completely screw up and ruin everything for yourself.

oh ok. so since he made one comment on a message board, you know him? i wonder how you'd react if someone said the same about you.

and i still think we disagree here on what exactly he meant. i don't think he was saying he was never going to listen to any music or read any books again. i think he was saying he wanted to be independent from distraction while trying to write (notice he had had CDs to sell that he had obviously listened to before--how are they not oging to be influences?), and that he didn't want to write by imitating others. that's the way i took it.

You should really take reading comprehension classes, dear. I KNOW JUST SOME FUCKING KID THAT DOESN'T POST HERE WHO I USED IN A STORY TO HELP ME GET A POINT ACROSS. ACCENT THE WORDS AS I WROTE THEM THE SECOND TIME AND PERHAPS IT WILL MAKE SENSE.

Ok, now to address the second point. The chances of you making something generic INCREASE if you don't have outside influence there. He said that he sold them because he didn't want to continue living out other peoples' dreams and worshipping what they had done, but why must that be the way that you approach listening to music? It sounds like a juvenile way to view the subject to me, but music is a highly subjective thing. However, that's why we're here, to discuss things like this. Note that to be ignorant isn't necessarily a bad thing, and me calling someone ignorant is just me being my elitist self. I can't deny the fact that I can be quite a dickhead when it comes to matters like this sometimes, but people are bound to meet a lot of dickheads in their lives, so at least this way it's only on a messageboard. Also, as is obvious from this post, I get all train-of-thought on these messageboards and get all off topic. In conclusion, to cut out input from outside sources, you give yourself a more limited basis for comparison and ultimately stifle the creative process, in my eyes.

if i need reading comprehension classes, YOU need anger management therapy.

i understood fully what you meant. what you meant was, monkey made a comment that reminded you of some other kid you know. you then equated him with that other kid, and pigeonholed him because his idea didn't make sense to you. it's not that i don't understand, o aptly named adversary, it's that i DISAGREE with what you were doing there.

and if i have to reread your post until i fully "understand" (read: agree with) it, YOU need to learn what the rest of us learned in kindergarten--that if someone has a different opinion/perspective than you, it doesn't mean that they are wrong, stupid, appalling, ignorant, or whatever other terms you'd like to use. i'm not debating this issue with you any further. next time, stop the name calling and maybe you'll get somewhere.

No, you obviously don't "fully understand". I never likened him to the other kid. I simply made a point that some people view musicians as idols which is an odd concept to me. I did perhaps as a kid, but no longer, now I respect them for their genius and ability to create an art that is open to interpreatation on a listener to listener basis. I simply find that people who interpret music in an idolizing fashion is juvenile.

You guys are taking this way to seriously. It was a comment made in passing that sparked a healthy debate. Apparently some people just get too hot under the collar (see: not me) and feel the need to perpetuate things with comments that miss the target.

I really like Ani DiFranco. A lot of her lyrics have that same sort of anti-corporate angle. Has anyother writer said "open fire on MTV, NBC, CBS, and ABC... Open fire on the NRA and all the lies they told us along the way.. Open fire on each weapons manufacturer while he's giving head to some republican senator..." I love her lyrics.

I like to listen to everything ranging from audioslave to the who to the beatles to nirvana to sum 41. all good music kicks ass. I don't think there is a certain genre of music that stereotypical palahniuk readers listen to. I think that what really binds us is the nihilistic sentiment we all feel we've discovered through his writings.

Ok, I know no one has listed them yet...maybe because you haven't heard of them or something....but I like the Beatles.
It's quite surprising to read people listing bands w/o their influences. I think some of you are forgetting bands like The Doors and Led Zepplin to name a few.
As for me, I listen to (among others):
A Perfect Circle (Can't wait for september...)
Coldplay
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Dave Matthews Band
Depeche Mode
Eagles
Dido
Everclear
Garbage
Fleetwood Mac
Jackson 5/Micheal/Janet
NIN
Pixies
R.E.M.
Rage
Reel Big Fish
Save Ferris
Smashing Pumpkins
Silverchair
Soundgarden
Stone Temple Pilots
Sublime
TOOL
U2
(older) Weezer
The Fugees
Marvin Gaye
Beethoven
Vivaldi
Enya
Bjork
and RADIOHEAD
