Inspired to come here after a weekend in the boonies.

I was in a very small town on the Washington coast. Spending the weekend relaxing. I finished "Invisible Monster" but wanted more. There was no bookstore in the town I was staying in so I went to the next one down the coast and they had a small and I mean small bookstore. Inside I found several books by Chuck; "Choke", "Stranger Than Fiction".

My girl friend took the books to the cashier and she says "Oh, you like Chuck, he's such a nice man. He was in last week" She flips opens the books to the title page and behold I am buying signed copies of these tomes. The bookstore owner tells us Chuck's mother lives close by and he comes in once in awhile and while in he signs his books.

How cool is that?

So, thanks, that's was a great surprise that made my weekend.

Not posting the name of the store or town since his mother lives close - or so I was told.

It wasn't St. Helens which makes it all the cooler to me.

My favorite so far is ... well heck I like 'em all.

Though I have not yet read "Choke", or gasp... "Fight Club".

I only read Rant, and it was well after I had joined this community!

that means you have only two left (plus pygmy, releasing in may), but that's just the start. you'll be finding some incredible reads around here if your looking for great titles or other great authors. chuck has his list. we all have our lists, and oddly enough the names sprawled down those lists are generally similar. clevenger, baer, cormac, denis johnson, hempel, faulkner, hemingway, salinger, erickson, steven hall, this other new badass andrew davidson.. there's an exceptional list always to be found here. (in fact, several.)

try one of chuck's favorites when you get the chance: the contortionists' handbook

the cult affectionately calls it "the handbook". clev's third novel comes out this year--a fall/winter release. he's also taught two writing intensives here.

anyway. welcome to the cult!
