not really. Maybe only to people who read a lot and know his work. But he's not nearly as well known as Steven King or Tom Clancy.

I think in a few years he will be high profile though.

like angus said, no, he's not high profile. and i respectfully disagree with the gentleman with the chuck norris avatar. i don't see chuck becoming high profile. it's the subject matter of his books, not many people want to hear it, or can relate to it. i don't think the ideas and ideal behind his books would appeal to a large portion of the public. i just see him as continuing his underground following.

he's not really low profile either, he's a succesful writer, just not as high profile as king or clancy like angus said.

If more of his books are made into movies, and he continues a successful writing career, he could be very well known some day.
I agree with trypdwyre that some people will be turned off by the subject matter, but I think a lot of people won't.

I think that he will be high profile among us underground freaks that general public will never respect beacause they don't accept what is foreign and unknown

i can see where you're both coming from, angus and ish. i think i just probably have a different view of what people actually read. its not about being foreign or unknown, or about success with movie adaptations or any of that, it all usually boils down to what people want to read, and a lot of it is the same old stuff. Nora Roberts, Tom Clancy, Danielle Steel, Robin Cook type stuff. not that any of it shouldn't be read, but it's more of a passive reading type material, little thought involved and plot lines that are easy to cope with/relate to.
i just think that chuck writes in a way that not many people do erlate to, or want to cope with. it's just not mainstream material type reading.
and ish, you're probably right, he will enjoy a bit of high profile amongst his undergound following.

Any book that has "national bestseller" on it can be considered mainstream.

That's actually kind of funny to think about. I'll always mention certain things from a Chuck book and I just expect the person I'm talking to to immediately know what the hell I mean. They look at me like, "huh?". I guess that's how my selfish mind works, I assume just because I like something, everyone else should, too.

There arent to many high profile writers. Even the greatest books dont get much attention for the writers.

Anne Rice for one.

But really, a high profile wouldnt fit Chuck. I dont really know that, im just guessing

99% of the population watch more movies than read books on a 7 sigma magnitude. so high profile writers only apply to the literate of us.

but keep hitting people who don't read books, i sure-as-hell do, just don't count them as votes for or against chuck. anyone who knows books knows chuck.

only if the list is compiled by a reputable organization, like the New York Times Bestseller List. i wouldn't think a book to actually be a mainstream book if you're going by "Richard Rambling's Personal Bestseller List".

you are dumb.

books that you would find in a bookstore and have "national bestseller" printed on the cover are ALWAYS from reputable sources. The only exception I've seen is Neal Pollack's Anthology of American Literature and that's an obvious satire. find a fucking book with "bob's personal bestseller" on the cover and I'll show you a fraud. the only thing a publisher has going for them is their reputation. they don't want to fuck that up.

mirthless

Chuck isn't that high profile because he appeared on Conan. Conan is the best late night show out there, but come on. No one really watches it. They had to move it to Comedy Central and no one watches that channel. Why watch that channel? All they do is show nothing but Saturday Night Live reruns that suck.

A LOT of people watch Comedy Central.

And I didn't say that he has THE HIGHEST OF HIGHEST profiles, I just said it was pretty high.

And they just show last night's episode on Comedy Central. Conan is still on NBC.

Still, I think most people would watch Conan for maybe the first half hour and then watch something else. On the night Chuck was on, most common people just stuck around to see Tarantino, then watched somthing else instead of waiting to see Chuck at the very end.

did it look like i was talking about only books that have that printed on it?
when you can start reading a whole post, rather than picking out one sentence, i'll respond to you.
"they don't want to fuck that up." so don't you do it either chief.

Chuck is high profile like Irvine Welsh and Bret Easton Ellis are high profile. They are writers who have a huge cult following and do occasionally break into the mainstream, or at least the novels themselves do (Trainspotting, American Psycho, Choke). Though they are all pretty popular they will never make Oprah's Bookclub list or become as popular as John Grishiam. But Chuck, along with the other two writers I mentioned are highly read amongst highschool students and read even more by college students. So I guess you can say that yeah he is high profile to an extrent.

I'm not from the U.S., I'm from Canada, but we ALWAYS here about high profile stuff from america, and the only people who really know anything about Chuck are really into underground art.

Sad to say, where I live now, a shit load of people haven't even seen Fight Club the movie.
