Judging by the date it was probably Weetabix.
Didn't they sing that Teenage Kicks song?
Beware: the homosexual undertow is what will really get you.
This is a really good idea.
Beware: the homosexual undertow is what will really get you.
I don't think Undertow was gay. He just looked it a little.

I had a Queers 7" where they covered the Undertones. That was a really, really good record.

You in warm delicious seminal fluid?
Chuck's books won't make you gay. However, being molested by a Catholic priest on drugs will turn you gay if you weren't gay already, and then make you molest little boys when you are older.
Oh, I forgot: You have to get elected a US Senator first.
This is a really good idea.

This again. The title has a slight ass stick up.
An overtone is a sinusoidal component of a waveform, of greater frequency than its fundamental frequency. Usually the first overtone is the second harmonic, the second overtone is the third harmonic, etc.
--In barbershop music, the word overtone is often used in a different (though related) way. It refers to a psychoacoustic effect in which a listener hears an audible pitch that is higher than, and different from, the four pitches being sung by the quartet. This is not a standard dictionary usage of the word "overtone." The barbershopper's "overtone" is created by the interactions of the overtones in each singer's note (and by sum and difference frequencies created by nonlinear interactions within the ear).
Undertone can mean: An underlying or implied tendency or meaning; an undercurrent.
Maybe he meant homosexual overtures: a formal or informal proposal or offer.
Homosexuals: Overt Ones In Palahniuk's Books
The homosexuality of every character in his books is so evident. Buy this eight page book for £20, and you'll realise everything you ever read about Misty Wilmot was an insidious ploy by an island of meth-heads trying to turn you gay!
You guys all limit the 'secretive' stuff in his works to homosexuality. I'm not saying it is or it isn't, but you can't propose one idea as the motivation for the totality of the works as what pre-empts every subliminal idea. Every aspect of someone's life goes into their work, not just their sexuality, as Freud would try to argue. There's more to the world than sex.
"They sold you hippies grunge, hip hop, now liberty activism."
I'm very much in the dark.
I, like someone a few posts earlier, am also new to this site and so I tend to ask what I suppose are well known facts about Chuck, but such is life.
First of all, how does anyone know, for a fact, that Chuck is gay? Has he stated it in an interview or to someone publically? Are you basing this off the fact that he tends to use 'homosexual undertones' in his novels, or off the fact that he's not married? Is he even married? I don't know. It's just that the thought of him being homosexual never even crossed my mind, and so I was wondering how everyone came to this conclusion.
But secondly, let me say, that I completely agree with what someone said earlier (forgive me for forgetting your name at the moment) about Chuck not being a 'gay writer' -- that is, not trying to push a particular agenda. And yes, I also fully support the fact that if anyone HAS earned the right to insert more of his personal life into his work, it would be him.
All I know is that I completely respect what he's done for modern literature.
He's definitely a homosexual. He came out about three and a half years ago on one of the audio-blogs he used to do for the site.
Read about it in wikipedia, not that that's necessarily an authoritative source unless you can check your facts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palahniuk
It is a little confusing that he has one of these bumper stickers on his car...

Just kidding! I made up that last bit!
This is a really good idea.
I've just recently found out about Chuck's sexuality and shocked as hell, as if I've found out that my dad is gay or sometin' like that... but I got over it soon and, in a way, I think I admire him even more for not being like other gay artists that, in a way, relate only to that community... stuff like that

first off, a little education on semantics
look, i know calling someone a queer is an insult. or at least it was back in the day. (and words can always be hurtful so i suppose it can still be used venomously today). But queer is now an academically accepted word, and it has a different meaning than gay. (the gay rights movement and the queer rights movement are different things). The identitiy of queer involves a good deal of radical theory and thought, very let-wing, and very in your face. As an example: The gay rights movement supports the right for gays to marry. The queer rights movement does NOT support this right, because marriage is a sexist institution based on owndership and the entire system needs to be dismantled and started from the ground up and be exlusive of all sexual and gender identities and relationships.
In many contexts queer has also ben adopted as a NON politcally loaded word, and is simply used as an umbrella term for the myriad dissident sexual identities. I identify as queer AND gay, and dont believe those two to be synomonous, but other gay men may refer to themselves as queer and simply mean gay. So, even though the word has a specific and political meaning, it is still used in a broader context. Additionally, I have heterosexual frineds who refer to themsleves as queer, because of their political beliefs and the like.
The term homosexual, is a very medical, scientific term and while some folks may be using it as an attempt to not offend anyone, it makes my life sound like a clinical diagnosis, and it is generally frowned upon to be used in this sort of context, especially over and over again... aka, you could say that person is a homosexual, which is fine, i suppose, but to say that it is an example of homosexual writing or homosexual fiction is kind of stepping to the edge of good taste.
With that in mind, queer fiction and queer authors are part of a literary genre. Chuck does not write queer fiction, and even though is is queer, he is a not a queer author.
With THAT in mind, there are definitely queer undetones in his books. When people are mentioning fiction as being his craft they have been discussing either queer characters or homoerotic relationships. There is much more to the craft of fiction than character development. There are thematic struggles and ideologies that help govern the queer rights movement, and, realistically, life has a different impact on queer people in a society that still doesn accept them entirely than on striaght folk. These types of things DO appear in Chuck's writing. You dont have to "try to read into it" because it is there. He is still an expert craftsman, but you cant deny it.
Additionally, there are numerous courses on queer theory and queer literature and the like. To say that the observation of queer themes or undertones in an suthors work is a result of queer identification as well as a search for reification of a personal queer identity is just ignorant. Go to many highly acclaimed colleges and universities and find multiple classes if not entire departments about this stuff. (You can major in gender and sexuality studies at the university I went to, which was a private and exclusive mini-ivy in connecticut) As average readers and the fans we may very well NOT be the best to comment on this sort of thing. I know that I have not taken any queer studies or queer literature courses, as my academic interests were elsewhere, even though I am queer. I am not a good enough literary scholar or queer theorist to do more than speculate on the queer nature of Chuck's books. So when considering this topic, please recognize that there is an entire field of study that many comments on this forum have entirely ignored, due to their own heteronormativity, most likely.
Finally, Chuck does a great job of writing work that everyone can enjoy. But realize that for a lot of his queer fans reading his books we DO feel a relationship with those books that we may not with other books or authors. Dont jump to conclusions... He DOES write to a queer community, but that is not his only audience.
I Agree! Greath novels!

Iron, you reported a post that was two years old, and your reason was this post. There's no need for that, unless there was some spamming or something so explicitly derogatory (which has become quite hard to do here) it made the Missing Link seasick. So again you don't need to report two-some year old posts. I don't know, maybe you were trying to quote it and your fingers knotted up. Plus I have no idea what you're talking about.
stop messing w/ the boy, Cor.
you'll only confuse him.

i remembered thinking that he was very good at writing from a female point of view.....does that mean anything in regards to being gay though?

isn't that like asking if white a writer writes a very good story from a black man's POV, that that says something in regard to him being a different race?
i've been under the impression that one of the main points illustrated in fight club is that men the narrater's generation have had too much female influence in their lives, and need to release some of the tension at having failed dreams, put upon them partially by their mothers, etc. the relationship formed with tyler durden, while having underlying homosexual attachments, is also a sort of projection of his father...he is even abandoned by him.
forgive me if i'm wrong, which i probably am, and i'm really sorry if i've gotten the plot too intwined with the movie's, but i've seen it more than i've read it.

i love how much emphasis people put in these stupid little four letter words, such a great deal is dependant on what ignorant people think. everything's derogatory if you let it be
4 letter words : like "ghey" ?

lol!! i meant worce ones than that, good point though
I had no idea Chuck was gay until I listened to one of his audio interviews. It was obvious then.
Did it change anything? Nope.
Whether he sucks dick or eats pussy, Chuck is still the author who made me want to read again, and more importantly, write again.
Since I started reading Chuck earlier this year I've read almost all his books, and about thirty other books by other authors like Camus, Hemingway, Salinger, Fitzgerald, Ellis, Clevenger, Baer, and about 10 others. I've written about 10 short stories, and am working on starting up a graduates degree in literature. Without Chuck's books, I may never had rediscovered my love of literature. And I imagine I'm not the only one his books have had this effect on.
I guess what I'm saying is: Who cares if Chuck is gay? He's still the man who wrote the books that made us want to read again.
ModerJesus! Yeast a good idea! Think about it!
