Has Chuck changed?
It seems to me that Chuck has made a drastic change, going from his usual story line to horror novels. I think it's great, I don't think it's bad - I just can't read horror novels, I can't get into them. His pre-horror books were all great, those that I read. I'm thinking of picking up Lullaby, but I'm not sure if it's anything like those other books...any suggestions/comments?
Thanks,
Scott Hetkowski
Thanks. I read the first four pages, but became scared out of my pants. I'll be sure to try out a bit more of it, maybe.
You got scared? Really? hmmmmm.....
In the very beginning he speaks of bodies that show up in the upstairs hallways, I've had past experiences with this.
He only touches on the ghost stuff in Lullaby - but from what little there is, that book of ghost-related short stories sounds like it'll be pretty good.
Am I the only one that found Lullaby to be funny as hell rather than scary as hell?
I didn't find it scary at all. And I only found some parts funny.
I really don't think Lullaby is a horror story. The focus of it isn't the supernatural elements, but rather the way the narrator interprets them. I suppose that could be said about any horror novel, but I just don't think Chuck was trying to scare us with Lullaby. At least I certainly hope he wasn't.

As I read on more and more, I'm noticed that it's not much of a horror story. To give Chuck some credit, some parts were a tad bid on the scary side...but most of it was just the same great reading material that he always rights. He did a great job.
One question, in the beginning...how come he builds model houses?
Scott Hetkowski
You find out later.
I've been reading more and more into the book. I'm near page 105 or so, it's getting pretty interesting. I think the fact that the main character is a reporter, kind of leaves him with some bland characteristics. Unlike Survivor, and Choke, (the other books I've read) Lullaby's Carl Streator has a unique reputation to fill. I'd say Chuck did a swell job, but the book hasn't picked up any speed yet. I'm hoping it has some clever twists to it, I'm waiting to find out.

Hooooooray!
are you talking about lullaby because if you are it was never meant to be a horror story
the moral is absolute power corrupts absolutly
which he writes in the book
ah, now you've gone and spoiled the book for arduous.
BTW chuck palahniuk thinks its a horror novel but of course thats just his opinion
I finished it yesterday. Excellent. It's somewhat of a horror novel, because some of the things he crosses over, actually are true. That's the scary part, or atleast, that's what I find to be scary.
Hey Rossfy,
the best way to get your answers would be to post a thread. Just click on "New Topic" on the top right hand side on the opening page of this forum.
List the questions you have and people will answer, debate, banter.
I'm not saying you're going about this wrong, I just think you'll have better luck posting a thread.
Also, don't forget to check out the chuck interviews on this site. AUTHOR>MEDIA .
There were also some new Fan Papers posted recently. I think in news.
Seems to me he's been wearing the exact same thing for years!

Looks like he got contacts and you got a haircut and a tie.
I had an Australian teacher who wore the same thing day after day for nearly a year. When I asked him about it he never came back.
So the moral of the story is that change is bad.
If this wasn't the ruled-with-an-iron-keyboard Author forum I'd start a Has Chuck Changed His Underwear? thread and the first post would be about how he's starting to smell a little!
But you condensed it all nicely and piggybacked it on someone elses thread. Sly.
He's gotten a little older since FIGHT CLUB though.

9 or 11 years to not be exact
I don't thnk chuck is trying to change, but I know hes trying to change his writings. In a SF Bookstore during paperback from choke tour, he said he didnt want to make a fight club squal kind of thing. That once he's written a story its almost dead to him after.
This is the same trap that music artists get caught in. How Radiohead became noticed as that "creep" band.

Hey, Scott. Funny thing about Lull. A friend of mine, he'd read the book in an afternoon. Said that he went to the bathroom, made lunch with it, layed in bed, on the couch when his girlfriend wasnt watching TV, ignored her when she spoke, he did nothing without his nose in it. Said he laughed his ass off for 5 hours straight. His first Palahniuk novel. He told me because he'd heard I'd joined his workshop and when he picked up the book he thought of me and then read the first few pages and bought it and then went on home for a hellava day.
Oh, yeah, my point ... Lullaby was the first Palahniuk book for my friend Tilly. He laughed his ass off and now loves Palahniuk. I remember thinking, How much will he laugh when he reads Survivor ? The point is, he became a fan with Lull. When an author hits other genres, he generates new fans, and if he's good enough, he'll keep the fans he all ready had. But no matter what, Chuck won't change himself. No matter what, he'll still maintain his satiric humor and honest wit. Glad you were finally able to enjoy it

perfectly put
Yeah, my first Chuck book was Lullaby too and I loved it. I let my father read Fight Club, which he liked, but then tossed him Lull and he dropped it.
All a matter of preference I guess.

And yeah, I laughed my ass of while reading Lullaby, but not as much as I did when I read Choke.
No, you've changed.

i described the ending of choke to my mom and she laughed, then she thanked me for waiting until after dinner to tell that story

Don't worry about the "horror" premise. It isn't really horror. It's just as good as Chuck's other stuff, but it is alot different. His writting style has changed a lot, but it's probebly better this way. He still is develping it though.
