I say that as each one of us is getting something signed, we tell him about it.

He wrote the books that inspired us. He wrote the essays that taught us. And if you follow his writing, he talks about building a colony of writers, of maybe teaching one day. The latest book he wrote is people sitting around trading stories.

Plus there's the anthology project, showing his interest in us, as writers.

This may appeal to him. We got nothing to lose by asking. I'll be personally handing him a flier for the event.

I'm trying like hell to get around this last minute thing that came up...

If I can, I'll probably still have to come back that night, or early the next morning. It'll be a long ass day. But worth it, I'm positive.
CULT READING

When: After Chuck's reading, starting between 11 p.m. and midnight
Where: Apocalypse Lounge, on 3rd St. between Avenues A and B

We are set, folks. Many of you have seen me going back and forth on PMs, so I could get a bearing on the plans.

Here's the game plan for what may be the first official Cult reading.

Very important: This is a list of the people who are reading/attending/maybe attending. If you are not on this list, get in touch with me, so I can add you to it. Also, if you are showing up with a friend, let me know. I need to have an idea of how many people are showing up.

Reading:
RKDaley
bssmokie
jase
Dr.&Mr.
Framstedt
me

Attending:
Dennis
Mirkah
VP

Maybe:
JustinHolt
Bitofafinger
xk3z0frenick

If I forgot anyone, or anyone wants to be added, let me know.

Any questions, let me know.

There are no limits or anything. It's open to poetry, short stories, whatever.

And for those of you who aren't from NY, last call doesn't hit until 4 a.m. So we got some time to manifest our rhyme.

Also, to the readers. If you have an idea of what you're reading, hit me up with some titles and bylines.

Thanks and cheers.
I started another thread about this in the GD.

Just to note that i won't be able to go. Is really due to the financial side of it. The flight is $280-ish something, and I just know I am going to spend some more in moving around even if I stay at my in-laws. Which I am not quite sure, i would be well recieved, alone and in such short notice.

So yeah, it's sad because i wanted to go.

I would NOT recommend trying that. You'd end up paying for the parking plus a huge a cab fare both directions, no too mention the extra hassle. Much easier to pay through the nose for a local parking garage in the city if you can't find a parking space on the street.

As a cult newbie, I am looking forward to meeting everyone on Tuesday. Sadly, with my work I can't get their as early as the rest of you, but I be there eventually. How will I find the rest of the Cultists? There should be a standard cult uniform or something.

Well shit, my gf and I will definitely be there for the event, aiming to be at BN at two... but we'll see on the reading. I'll bring some of my writing, of course. Depending on the time, we may follow on to the Apocalypse but the TRAINS man, the trains! I'll have to see when the last one out of the city runs. I think it's one in the morning for the Conn. line.

I wish I wasn't in hell at the moment. I would shack up in a hostel for the night. I have a revision deadline on Wednesday, because apparently I am the ghostwriter of part of a book on Simon and Schuster.

This happened a week ago. This happened three days before an existent deadline. Made that fucking deadline though. No sleep. A beard growing.

It's such a long story and I shouldn't complain... I just made more than a year's salary in one week.

I was just getting back into the swing of the writer's workshop and now I'm busy as all fuck... but this thing gets locked in two weeks no matter what, so I'll be able to breathe then.

I like how I've been a member of The Cult for nearly two years and that THAT was my second post.

We're not outcasts or anything.

I may geek out and wear my black cult shirt so if you see a 6' women with brown hair in a cult shirt, that's probably me. Come up and say hi and I'll hook you up with the rest of the gang.

I would so love to attend the reading, but I'm staying with a few folks and I unfortunately have to take their feelings into mind...standing in line for hours for a writer they've never heard of seems to be enough  I'm hoping 11 am is soon enough to be there...heh...I can't wait can't wait can't wait can't wait...

Okay folks, I will be up most of the night sending nastygrams by email so that I can leave tomorrow in time to get to yaffa's by 1:00 (or earlier).

How do I find you guys once I get there?

I will have on jeans, grey sneakers, and a bright orange t-shirt. I'll be carrying a dark red backpack, and my "power koala" from Chuck will be hanging out of my backpack's pocket. If I can't find anyone, I'll get a table, unless someone's getting reservations or something.

Regretfully, I will not be able to make it either.

What I thought was promising turned out to be, well, blah.

I am going to miss this opportunity to meet everyone, and share in the reading, but hopefully I can meet you all soon.

I'm dying to be in the city right now... damn this job!

I'm leaving for the reading way too late.

I know I'm not going to get a seat, much less even a good seat.

I'll never find the rest of the Cultists.

I'll chicken out, and not go to the Cult reading after Chucks reading.

I'm known to my friends as "The Optimist".

Smile Big

Ok, just got back from Chucks reading.

Let’s get this out of the way first. I'm ashamed to admit but I did bail on the Cult reading after Chucks reading. There's a laundry list of reasons why, and none of them are very good. On the bright side, my wife and I did get to meet Mirkah at the book store and she was more than wonderful. Thanks for your kindness Mirkah. Sorry we didn't make it to the 'after party'. Pleeeeaaaassse invite us next time, and I promise we will show.

Now, back to Chuck. A Barnes and Noble employee said there were over 800 people there for the signing. The place was packed! Because of work schedules, we didn't get there early enough to get a seat, but we had a great view from the front of the 'standing section'.

Chuck looks much thinner to me, like he lost weight. During the Q&A, someone asked him about any 'physical transformations' in his life. He said that he spent most of his adult life "trying to weigh more than 200 lbs", but he gave up that quest. Seems like no more hardcore workouts and steroids for Chucky.

Chuck was very entertaining, and he had some good stories which I will allow someone else to relate (“The Taster” at the adult video arcade was the most disturbing). His people distributed the teriyaki beef scented air fresheners into the crowd, and he gave out small rugs that looked like steaks for anyone who asked a question. He also tossed out severed limbs which caused a bit of scuffle here and there. Chuck said something like, “It’s just a plastic foot. Don’t hurt each other”.

He read the story “Hot Potting” from Haunted. Even when I read it a week ago, I didn’t think that it was one of my favorite stories in the book. Now after hearing Chuck read it… I still don’t really like it. I’d be curious to hear everyone else’s opinion of that story and how it plays to a crowd in a public reading.

While Chuck was signing my stuff, I asked him if the book on Minimalism was a rumor or reality. He said that he is trying to get Tom Spanbauer to co-author it with him since it would feel “inauthentic” if Chuck didn’t include him.

Once again, Chuck proves to be such a man of the people. Before the event, some of the Barnes & Nobel staff were trying to warn everyone at the back of the line that they could not guarantee Chuck would still be signing books by the time they got up to him. Chuck came on and basically said that he would stay and sign for everyone and anyone that wanted to meet him. I left the book store around 11:00 pm, with Chuck still smiling and greeting everyone as he signed more books. It was great to see the man in action.

It’s late, so I’m sure I’m leaving out tons of details. Others will fill in the holes, but these are the basics as I remember them. Still sorry I didn’t meet up with more Cult members this time, but that was my own fault. Can’t wait to hear about the ‘other reading’ from the rest of the gang.

Many thanks to Chuck for making this a better than average Tuesday.

Dave

Relax kids, I have a feeling there are tons of pics and accounts of both readings to come. I'm not going into detail right now because I'm sitting in the Jazz Hostel on internet access that costs a dollar for ten minutes. Suffice to say, we had a blast.

R.k.Daley, Dr. Jekyll, anxious phoenix, BS Smokie, Jase, Dennis, Mirka, Kareem and me were all sitting together dead center in like rows 7, 8, and 9 at Chuck's reading. Then we had Indian food. Then we played the Apocalypse and we were very well received. Everybody was great.

Here's wishing that the rest of you who wanted to be there could have been. I'm still in the city until Friday. Talk to ya soon.

Actually...I got the whole thing on video...with exception of one or two minutes in which the damn dvdram ran out cause the disks only hold 30 minutes and he talked for about an hour and 15 minutes...damn disks...as soon as I figure out how to get em on the computer I'll post a link or something...

And yes there are better stories in haunted...

i wished i had gotten the memo about reading one's own writing. instead i brought my dog-eared copy of numbers in the dark by italo calvino. embarassed, isat at the bar, drinking hoegardens, talking to the manager and john, the bartender, listening to some great stuff while wondering if anyone in the would be cult group would notice that the only person the suit at the bar could be is framstedt.

so, having missed said memo, when are we doing this again. i've got sheaves of nonsense written here and there and would love to exploit myself publicly.

Dammit, why didn't you come over and introduce yourself?! Outrageous man. I watched you listening. And I thought you were some guy who happened to be at the bar, who found the reading moderately entertaining. Nothing more. Next time I travel 750 miles for something Cult related, fucking introduce yourself.
