Cult Meet-Up - NYC May 31st Reading!
Hey everyone,
Now I know we have a ton of NY Chuck fans. Even fans in the tri-state area who will definitely be coming to Chuck's May 31st reading of Haunted at the Barnes & Noble in Union Square.
And every year this goes down, there are always people who post here wanting to meet up with other Chuck fans after and before the event.
Well, this year we're finally going to attempt to orchestrate this as an official meet-up.
So not only will I be in attendance to hang out, but both Mirka and Kareem, two of your friendly ChuckPalahniuk.net staffers, will also be hanging out. They're both flying in for the reading.
So if you have any interest in doing this, post here and we'll begin assembling our NY chapter of The Cult for some beer and food come May 31st!

Definetely count me in.
I'll be there.

I'm gonna definitely be at the reading, but do you really wanna go and hang out with me? I mean, I'm a very boring person and I'll probably just sit there with my mouth shut feeling awkward and making the everyone else feel same totally killing the night's party...
But, maybe, I'll be there...
Screw Boston! I'm heading to New York.
I'll work it in regardless. i 'll get mixed up but I'll get there. that's just too much of a feast to pass up
hell ya! can't wait

if i took a train or bus would anybody pick my ass up?,,, should probably get a cab...What's better coming by car or bus/train?
if i took a train or bus would anybody pick my ass up?,,, should probably get a cab...What's better coming by car or bus/train?
Take the train and then a cab. Grand Central is in the low 40s (42nd I think), and the reading is on 17th so it's not too bad of a cab ride.
I'm still debating driving or taking the train. Driving means parking, which down there will cost more than a round trip train ticket. Anybody know a good cheap garage nearby?
Count me in! Me and the Mrs. are definately planning on going. Look forward to meeting you all then.

I'll be there. I plan on drowning myself in a bottle of whiskey after the reading. If I do it alone, I'm an alcoholic. If I do it with a bunch of people, I'm a social drinker. Cheers to that.
I can suggest at least ten good bars to choose from, all that would be appropriate for a Cult Meet-Up (i.e., not trendy and full of people that the average misanthrope cultist would probably hate).
Right off the bat, I would say KGB. Any voracious Chuck fan will know why. It's also an awesome bar.
JudasCow: Parking isn't too hard. The reading is in Union Square. You will definitely find a spot in the East or West Village. You might even find a spot around the square. Worst comes to worst, you can hop a cab or walk over. It's not far or expensive. It's, what, a Tuesday? Tuesday nights aren't too hard. Weekends are the clusterfuck.

Dude, where do you live in Boston? I'm in Dorchester and I'll probably be heading up there for the reading. If I am and you want a ride, I'll give you one.

hey, that's kinda cool! snuff's in the shower but a hostel is a manageable price, since we'd split it.

Ha, how awesome would that be! The first Cult 'Sumber Party'!
I got a single and its $56 a night. I think the doubles are $46 per person.
oh balls. well i just had the foresight to check the calendar, and i see here that this is a tuesday. there's no way i'm going to be able to get out of work for this on a weekday. bummer. i thought it was a weekEND. when are people going to the city? we were planning on another weekend soon anyway since the last one was so much fun. and i still haven't been to misshapes. maybe we could still come up sat/sun.

Since this is happening at some point in the near future, should be brainstorm things, like meeting times and places, or where to head afterward? Who shall be sacrificied? Maybe even get an idea about what kind of crew we'll be running with? As in, how many?
Something something.
Yea.

i will be driving to this gig myself. I've only driven to new York once before, and after hours of going in circles i had to dish out a lot of green for parking. so if any of you have suggestions on parking I'd appreciate it. or maybe it's better to dive to a station outside the city and take a trian in. again, only been NY a couple of times so any suggestions on how to avoid hassle would be a help. cheers.

you could take a train or something like that, but im gonna find a parking garage- there are the park and go kind- theyre all over the damned place- its not that expensive either- i think when i went in i parked for like... 4 hours and it was 22 clams- after that i think it goes to 25 for more than four hours-- then there are the ones that are "special" close to monuments and real sight seeing type places- like the museum of natural history that go for like 40 bucks an hour- which is shit- or you could find a meter (yeah right) and pay that way. i like the municipal lots- especially good when run by the homeless- they "watch your car" and you dont have to pay the two clams or whatever it is to park- there are a bunch of them around but the only one i go to is in chinatown- just cause that one gots the nicest bums...
find a park and go if youre driving. the one with the yellow signs- not the blue ones...
and dont forget to take your shit out of the car before parking- or at least throw it in the trunk... i know its a parking garage, but... it gives you peace of mind.
but on to plans-
i would also like to know where we're all gonna meet and what we'll be up to- im bringing one other person so that means 2 (all together and including me)
what are the details?
Parking in the city is an expensive nightmare. But once you accept that, you can find ways to deal with it. For one thing, anyone driving in, don't bother trying to find meter spots. The reading is in Union Square, which is a very jam-packed tourist area downtown. It's crushed in-between Broadway and Park Place. But if you really want to avoid garages, I would suggest parking east of Union Sq., on like 3rd Ave. or something. You'll have to walk a couple of blocks, but if you can find a decent spot, you'll save a lot of money. Just make sure you understand all the parking signs.
Which leads to the next option, which is parking garages. They're very expensive, but they're safer, and they're all over the city. Just make sure you get the rates correctly off the boards they have hanging up outside the garage. Parking can get very expensive if you don't plan for it. So try and find garages that have long-term rates for overnighting. I think there's a few good ones on 14th street (the south end of Union Sq.).
As for hitting up a bar, most of the places I would suggest are further downtown, in the Village, and would require us all piling into cabs... which can get a little confusing. So maybe we should just play it by ear and walk to a nearby place in Union Sq. once the reading lets out. I know there's one like a block away that I've eaten at which is pretty large and could handle a party of our size.
But I'm open to suggestions.

a tuesday event with a bunch of cult cronies could be just the event to perk up this wayward son.
my suggestion however for the after party *ahem* would be to pile into cabs and head to the bling tiger, located conveniently at west 10th and hudson street. they've got plenty of beer on tap, more the 24 from all over the states and a decent selection of bottles, too. but, please, don't ask for a bud or a coors or else kate will club you to death like an errant icelandic seal caught in the february kill.
additionally, there are a whole host of cheap eats available in the neighborhood. heck, there are even menus behind the bar that you can use to get a delivery! the falafel place right next door does a gyro platter that is suitable for zeus, or pallas athene if she'd been out drinking too late. cowgirl across the street has decent burgers and tv/ts singers in the wayback. there are a few microbiotic joints as well, but this carnivore hasn't ventured into them.
by the way, for those of an historical and literary bent, once suffused in the best of america's microbrew, wander up to the white horse tavern where you can try to drink 19 whiskeys and match this american master's drunken suicide. anyone know who i'm talking about? Decipher - LADY MATH SON

If you are persistent, you will find a spot on the street. It may take up to 20 minutes or more (I once spent 45 minutes on a Friday night). Thing is, I hate garages. I parked in a garage to cover the premeire of the PSP for my job, and it was $60 for two and a half hours. Luckily, my job picked up the tab, but fuck garages.
If you're taking the FDR down into the city, get off at Houston St. Make a right and go down a few blocks, then hang another right. Alphabet City and the East Village are great places to park. You may have to get a $5 cab to Union Square, which is infinitey cheaper then a parking garage.
I can give you more specific directions if you want.
Also, I don't know what time you're aiming for, but between 3 and 5 p.m., the city empties out as a lot of people go home. Also, it's a somewhat residential neighborhood but you're getting there before a lot of people get home from work.
The best part of these neighborhoods is, on the side streets, there are no meters.

Persistence is the key. Drive off Broadway a couple of blocks and you can find street parking, without meters, if you do drive around. Garages are a complete waste of money if you park anywhere near a landmark. $60 for two hours isn't uncommon...
If my girlfriend can get the blasted day off, we'll be taking the train from CT into the city as early as possible.
Does anybody think there will be an overload of people at this thing? Will people be turned away is the question. Because I will motherfucking camp.
Who am I? I'm just a guy. I'm devastatingly new here and I apologize for that.

I keep the little jar on my windowsill, right behind my bed, right near my head so if I look up in the middle of the night, up and back, I can see her swimming in the murky little pool of her own shit and vomit, and I can smile.

Did I mention I'm not old enough to drink? I suppose I can still have fun, however...
It's a seven o'clock gig, right? I don't have work or school, but I suppose others do- what time do you think we should be at the reading? It takes me about 45 minutes to get into the city from my house... thinking to myself.... not including traffic.... leave by five.... get to the reading at.... 6....thirty?.... hmmmm.... that seems a little late.... leave by 4:30... yeah, that seems more reasonable... and afterward... how long is the reading? anyone know? then a thing after with all yous guys...

I will be coming down the FDR, and will be arriving around 3, so this is just perfect! Please PM me your directions and suggestions, as much detail as you can muster, as I am an idiot when it comes to stuff like this.
Since it's a weeknight I won't be staying long after the event, but if anyone wants to meet up for dinner or late lunch let me know the place and time. I don't have plans other than to bring a book or two and just find a place to read while waiting for the event to get rolling.
Yea, I don't know about anyone else, but I'm showing up pretty damn early. The last signing I went to, for Lullaby, I made the stupid decision to go to class, so I ended up showing at the end of the question and answer session.
I think for this one I'll get there a few hours early and sit outside and chainsmoke and drink whiskey. In fact, if we can get a couple of people there early, the smokers can have time to go outside and fill themselves with cancer, and the Culters that don't want to kill themselves can be placeholders.

Dr.andMr., anytime. Like I said, if you need something more specific, let me know. Hell, I might make it a day and hit my favorite Indian food restuarant earlier, so if you or anyone else wants to meet for the best, cheapest meal you've ever eaten, let me know.
It's not too far from Union Square... I walked over after the Lullaby signing.
And Judas, I'm aiming to get to B&N at 3 or 4 p.m. I was so pissed getting there late last time, and I figure if I get there early, I might be able to snag some sigs on my hardcovers of Survivor and Fight Club. It'll probably be easier if I'm closer to the front, before his hand goes numb.

Oh I'm making a day of it that's for sure, just have to figure where I'm staying that night. I still need to get a rough estimate on how long the ride will take from MA. I'll probably leave around five AM because i like being early and I'm skilled in the art of wondering. meeting up before hand would be cool, so let me know what your final plans are..
i kind of hate food, but i'm always up for sitting down, having hot Java, and talking about those crazy days that think us all together.

Speaking of java and bssmokie, she took me to an awesome place on St. Mark's Place that I had walked by a hundred times but never thought of going in. But when we did go in, not only were they playing the Clash, but they had outdoor seating so the two of us could chainsmoke.
Yaffa Cafe, I think it was.
Maybe we could even make that a place where a bunch of us could start congregating early in the day, before the signing.

I agree, this would make a good meet point. It's not an unreasonable trek to where we gotta be. Plus, we can all hang out and relax a bit before we get started.
So, what I want to know from the other people on this thread is: Can I get a Halelujiah? Anyone else interested in getting together beforehand to plan for battle?
We're talking Yaffa Cafe, a coffee joint on St. Mark's (8th Ave for the uninitiated). It's between 1st Ave and Ave A. I'll say it again: They play the Clash and the drinks are cheap. What more could you ask for?
And I'll be looking for you, Dr. and Sir. I'll be the tall guy with the Parliament Lights and the aviator sunglasses, dirty blonde hair and sexy blue eyes. I'm debating whether or not I want to wear my Cult t-shirt. That might be pushing it.

Amen to that. Any chance there'd be some parking nearby? I can be there around 3.
I'll be the short guy wearing a hideous orange t-shirt with no logos on it, and probably carpenter jeans. i've got very short brown hair and I'll probably be wearing my glasses and a backpack with books to keep me occupied just in case i don't find anybody.

Count me as a maybe. If i can get my disfuntional family to help me out with the money (my birthday would be on the 25th) for the trip, i can do it. NYC is the only state for now that is the cheapest for me to fly to, plus my inlaws live there.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
