Chuck hits the Big D - 6/13
Chuck continued his tour at the Border's bookstore in Dallas, TX yesterday.
He arrived at about 5:30 and commenced with signing books. There was at least 250 people in the bookstore, and when Chuck took a break at 7:00, probably 175 were still waiting for signings.
I myself got a copy of Fight Club and a copy of Haunted signed. In Fight Club, he wrote 'I am Rob's book!' In Haunted: "To Rob: Make some college mistakes!" along with a 'Roses and Shit Tour 2006' stamp.
The Border's people were trying to convince him not to do a reading or anything, but Chuck, being the good guy he is, insisted on it. So at 7:10 or so, after his break, Chuck arrives for a Q&A session. Those who asked questions received large artificial roses, and Chuck shared insightful stories, including the ones that inspired the events in his books.
However, at the beginning, he told us that it was going to be the 'light' version, because he's been in trouble for his language and story material at his readings, particularly Guts. He did his best, and was quite funny. During the retelling of the peeing in the soup scene from Fight Club, he said "And my friend would piss in the soup...Oh..I said piss." He did everything he could to refrain from language or dirtiness, but being good old Chuck, he ended his session with "So fuck yall!" Brilliant.
Anyhoo, it was my first time meeting Chuck, and it was great. Hello again to Scott and Susan, who I met while waiting in line, and I will definitely be there when he comes around again.
he doesn't sign other author's books. I wouldn't bother doing this.
i wanted to grab a copy of davinci code or some stephen king book and have chuck sign them. i really dont know why, just thought itd be funny.
its highly unlikely you'd get an author to sign someone elses work

where the hell did you come from ?
that wasn't there when i replied!
oh well, true nonetheless
There is already a Chuck Reading in Dallas thread.
It's on the front page of the site.
I'm feelin' onry tonight.

Actually someone on this site, Robot Puking, got him to sign another person's work. I don't remember who wrote it, but the dedication was, "Dear Sean. I did not write this. Love, Chuck."
There is hope, but not for us.

i would imagine that was long long ago
Probably, but it's still really funny.

especially if it was a bible
Jkuhlman got him to sign a douglas coupland book in NYC on the 5th of this month.
There is a picture of in the NYC reading thread i believe.
but then again, they are friends with eachother. I heard Chuck say to Dr. J&Mr. Hyde that he doesn't sign others work.
isn't there a a thread for the Dallas reading already? Did I already say that? cuz there is.

The Big D is so big it couldn't all be contained in one thread
Last year i tried to get Chuck to sign House of Leaves form me ( Palahniuk, Chuck - DNE (in the index)) but he said no. He used the bible as an example of another book people asked him to sign, and said that generally he found it disrespectful to the author.

Yeah, but it's in the announcements forum, and this is supposed to be the forum for reading accounts. So, I'm just playing by the rules.
Besides, the other thread is basically you bragging about Chuck signing your fake severed hand (again) and remembering that you were wearing a suit in NYC.

Yes, and you are ruining it! I had that thread completely dominatated.
Glad you read it though. hehehe
Chuck has been in Texas for the last two paperback tours. I hope we stay on his peoples list of good places to read. We're so damn far from anywhere else that we'd totally miss out if he skipped Texas.
Glad you showed up for the reading and shared your account. I feel a little bummed for leaving, but I felt a little too "obsessed fan" just sitting there in front of him listening as he talk to others. Plus, the basketball finals were starting and I was in Dallas so that = a party.
At the next reading just push me out of the way.

Haha, if you were 'obsessed fan', I think you handled it well. There were some people there who I couldn't help but laugh at because they literally freaked out and started shaking.
I did my best to remain cool and collected, but I probably acted like a schoolgirl and nobody wants to hurt my feelings by telling me so.
I agree with you about TX remaining on the good list. We can't just get up and go to another state like other folks. I think we will though, Chuck seems to enjoy himself when he comes to town. I hope he chooses Austin for his next tour, seeing as how I'll be in college there, so it'll be easier for me.
Yeah, Chuck's really cool. At the signing he wasn't just signing and pushing people away. He made sure he interacted with them and talked for a minute or two. It's great when somebody famous is so down to earth.
It's funny, during his Q&A there were two funny questions. 1) someone asked 'Did you get picked on during middle school and high school.' After a funny look Chuck replied 'Who didn't get picked on in high school?!'
2) Another person asked 'Are you a lonely person? because a lot of writers are.' Chuck said no and that he loved to be with people, and then added 'I don't want to get to the end of my life and be like "Man, I really cherish all those years alone...by myself...in front of the computer"'.
I love Chuck.
That's funny about the end of life comment. Seems like there some cool questions. there were in NYC as well. No one asked what it like to be next to Brad Pitt.
Goin' to school in Austin? Sweet. It's a great town and I'll be glad to have another Cultist in the area. Texas is strong on the Chucky P. love.

Oh yeah, I hear that Austin is a big Chuck city. We'll have to get together sometime and act like nerds. You know, because we read and stuff.
You shoulda seen everyone here at the meet UP last weekend. Up to four laptops going at once.
But yeah, anytime you are in Austin. Send me a PM. It's been said I'm pretty fun to hang out with.

Will do.
I'm positive that all my money when I get to Austin will go to concerts and Starbuck's.
Will do.
Starbuck's.
Oh you won't do Starbucks for long.
You'll do -
Spider House
Bouldin Creek
Jo's
Pacha
Little City
Genuine Joe's
Ruta Maya
Swerve
Austin Java
Flipnotics
And on the Chuck reading, to keep on topic, It was so damn cool to me when he walked in and got in line for coffee. I expected him to come in the backdoor, under tight security, but no, he just cruised on in the front likethe rest of us. i really wish he actually on that pedestal I put him on.

Yeah, that was one of the coolest things. He could be all stuck-up and high and mighty, but no, he's just a regular guy. He'll buy his coffee in the line like the rest of us, dammit!
I was the first girl he called on... I have some pictures from this and I brought my recorder. Once I get it uploaded, I'll let you guys know..
I remember you. We were only a few feet apart. Looks like the Cult is growing in Austin!
Sweet! My favorite part of the Q&A was when he was answering the "lonely" question... then he's looking off for a while and then says, "I'm trying to think of how I could say this so that it doesn't sound like it belongs on the Oxygen Network." then he stares off for a while again and I said, "YOU'RE CHUCK PALAHNIUK!"
There are some pictures here...
I remember when Chuck asked you if he put his filthy severed hand on your breast - You paused for a second and said something like - yeah, that'll be fun.
Those are nice pictures. Welcome to the Cult.

I remember you! I was the girl that asked about Rant. I also have a rose and I love it! It was a good time.
