Yay New York! I missed the Diary tour AND the Stranger Than Fiction tour, because of my stupid job, and the stupid short staff, and the stupid fact that I couldn't get a stupid comp day cause no one could cover the stupid slack.

But this year, I will attend. Any other Cultists in the neighborhood should raise their hands. We can go out and get drunk and cause mayhem, or at least shoot some pool, afterward.

I've been wondering when I would get a chance to mention this on here. I met the man in Minneapolis late this summer. No one even told me about the event, and I know some serious fans, but not all that internet saavy. I accidentally scanned through a local reader, and this tiny line of type caught my eye. He was reading tomorrow at some theatre no one had ever heard of in the middle of some quaint white neighborhood that by all assertions of the locale, should not exist. I spent that entire day trying to find a beat up old school boxing glove for him to sign. Having been a boxer forever, this should have been easy. Nope, I failed. I was currently homeless, and all my gear had been shipped away. So I have nothing for Chuck to sign, and a book isn't good enough for me. I want something unique and personal, as his work has effected me in life altering ways.

So I show up earlier than anyone, get a coffee across the street, and sit in front of this theatre reading 'Them'. After a few hours more kids start to show up, and I mean kids. Younguns. I invited a girl who is effectively my little sis, so she gets cuts. Then her friend. When Chuck finally arrives he cordially meets just about everyone in line, except me. He was visibly attempting to avoid me. This wasn't in my head, and I made sure to inquire with people in the vicinity who said, and I quote "Yeah, he was escaping you. It was totally weird. I noticed too." Being the domineering loud mouth that I am, would not stand for it, and said something to the effect of "You're not getting off that easy buddy. I been waiting all day. We're getting a pic together."

So I have a pic of myself with a rather rushed and uncomfortable looking Chuck shaking hands.

He does resemble Martin Short, whoever said that was dead on. He's so... clean looking. I pictured him more like his photo in Lullaby, with the hair and foreboding attitude. The black top. Not as conservative as he dressed on this occasion. Loafers, soft natural hues, drab olive dockers.

The only reasons I can assume his behavior would be on my appearance. I always dress like a 'space monkey'. Black Dickies pants, black wife beater top, covered in tattoos, doc steel caps, very built, short cropped black hair, black Alpha flight jacket, glasses. I look sort of militant. Did he think I was some dangerous, rabid fan? His security guard had just been dusted off from the exhibit at the British museum, where he was the feature. Chuck said I didn't look homeless and poor cause of the ink, I mention I have other talents that I traded for my work. Even homeless, I showered and shaved every morning and washed my clothing.

Someone passed out during 'Guts'. The ambulance came and everything. I am beginning to think it is a publicity stunt, but an ingenious one, until I realize how uncomfortable hearing that story made me, and I've got balls of steel. So I no longer second guess this. He outdid himself with that one. I almost don't want to read 'Haunted'. Almost.

Anyway, I've beat up rockstars and shit, cops, my dad, Mall of America security guards, myself, I'm 86'ed from EVERY bar in Minneapolis. And I RESPECT Chuck. I'm being as cordial as humanly possible, I really really want to get a moment with him. Groveling even. During Q&A he passes my arm repeatedly. He even calls on little sis, we're sitting 3rd row front and center when he tosses her a severed hand. Finally I get my question, severed leg delivered, and am beaming pleased. Until that point my Q was going to be: what do I have to do to get a body part? Luckily I pulled a movie inquiry out of my ass and everyone was pleased.

I got my leg signed and was happy. But to this day, I would still run into punker kids there asking "What did you say to Chuck? He hated you."

I can live with that douche from Blink 182 hating me. I can live with Louie Anderson hating me. I have no problem with most of Minneapolis wishing the plagues on my loins. I can handle MockyMockins and Alex Cassum scrutinizing and belittling me. But I want a second shot at Chuck. Unfortunately it'll have to be in Chicago this time around as I moved to South Bend, IN. Nothing good has ever happened to me in Chicago. I hate it.

i had a dream last night that i was in the mall and it just happened to be the day chuck was there for the signing. it was late in the day and he was leaving soon and i had nothing good for him to sign. ( at this point in the dream i actually started thinking about the time homer was going to meet Mr. T at the mall, kept saying "i'll go a little later, i'll go a little later. and when i finally got there the guy said he just left") in a panic i get on the line to see him, i forget what i had him sign, but it was lame. I also had about a million things to say to him, but much the way i did when i met keith hernandez at age 6, i froze up.
well anyway that nightmare is the reason i looked into finding out when the tour is. i am also making a list of things i might like to get signed by chuck, and things i want to say or ask him.

i have a Grappling Magazine interview with chuck that would be cool to have signed. I also might invite him to come train at my BJJ academy while in NY

its from the march 2002 issue. when i bought it i didn't even know who chuck was. my buddy was a big fan who had told me about the books, once i read the interview i bought survivor shortly after.
as far as the interview is good and even plugs the site. i'll email someone in charge and maybe they can put it up on the site

Last time Chuck was in Boston they sold tickets before hand. I didn't even know this and couldn't get in.
