Fight Club -- Frame Rate?

I am reading through Fight Club for the first time. I am sure this has been brought up on the forum as a question before: Palahniuk states that the films Tyler's projecting are running at 60 frames per second. I know most films are filmed at 24, sometimes 25, frames per second. Peter Jackson is filming the upcoming Hobbit movie at 48 fps and some viewers are complaining of headaches/the picture looking too lifelike. I have thought of a few possibilities, one being that perhaps every two frames are the same, making the end frame rate 30 per second. I suppose it could also be running the same frame three times, making it technically 20 frames per second, if you follow.

Ideas here? Or am I looking too far into it or mistaken about the common FPS of a film?

Thanks.
