I really enjoyed this book, however I'm a little confused as to the ending.

Why did the plan carried out by the people on the island, in particular Misty's in-laws, involve the suicides of both them and the other older families on the island. The book makes reference to all of the "local" families attending the unveiling, and it is stated that Misty's daughter sets her grandparents on fire. So if the whole purpose of this plan was to get rid of the corrupting tourists and restore their wealth, why didn't they want to stick around and enjoy it?
