The 'Invisible Monsters Remix' Is Now Out!

'Invisible Monsters Remix' by Chuck Palahniuk

Rejoice! A book that's been over ten years in the making is finally out. In 1999, Chuck released Invisible Monsters as his third novel. Though as some fans know by now, this book was actually a book he wrote many years earlier. The original publishers weren't happy overall with the story of Brandy Alexander, Shannon and friends, and Chuck, feeling sort of daring decided, rather than tone things down with his next book, he'd ratchet them up, and thus came Fight Club, which then became his first published novel.

When Invisible Monsters was released in 1999, Chuck didn't want fans to have to pay hardcover prices for a book he wrote many years earlier, so WW Norton themselves, did something daring and released the book directly to trade paperback format. No hardcover was ever released of the original book.

But then something cool happened: Invisbie Monsters went onto become one of Chuck's most beloved books. A true fan favorite. In fact, love of this book caused me to help spearhead a campaign in the early 2000s to have it released in hardcover.  Now, almost ten years later, Norton made it happen. But this isn't just a hardcover version of the book. Here's more from the publishers:

"Injected with new material and special design elements, Invisible MonstersRemix fulfills Chuck Palahniuk's original vision for his 1999 novel, turning a daring satire on beauty and the fashion industry into an even more wildly unique reading experience. Laced in are new chapters of memoir and further scenes with the book's characters. Readers will jump between chapters, reread the book to understand the dissolve between fiction and fact, and decipher the playful book design."

Chuck calls it the Criterion Collection version of Invisible Monsters, and it's out now.

Here's what the publishers, WW Norton had to say about it:

"Injected with new material and special design elements, Invisible MonstersRemix fulfills Chuck Palahniuk's original vision for his 1999 novel, turning a daring satire on beauty and the fashion industry into an even more wildly unique reading experience. Laced in are new chapters of memoir and further scenes with the book's characters. Exclusive! 'Invisible Monsters' Remix Book Cover

'Invisible Monsters' Remix Book Cover

Update: I spoke with WW Norton a little more about this project and was able to get the following details about what will be different about this version of the book.

"Injected with new material and special design elements, Invisible Monsters Remix fulfills Chuck Palahniuk's original vision for his 1999 novel, turning a daring satire on beauty and the fashion industry into an even more wildly unique reading experience. Laced in are new chapters of memoir and further scenes with the book's characters. Readers will jump between chapters, reread the book to understand the dissolve between fiction and fact, and decipher the playful book design."

Several months back we dropped some pretty huge news on you all when it was announced that Invisible Monsters would not only be re-released as a hardcover, but that it would be an updated 'remixed' version of the novel.  For those in the know, Monsters is the only book of Chuck's that was never originally released in a hardcover format.  That all changes next June 2012 when Norton will release this new version.  And today we have an exclusive first look at the cover.

'Invisible Monsters' Is Finally Coming To Hardcover

'Invisible Monsters' Is Finally Coming To Hardcover

For several years now, there has been an underground movement to get Invisible Monsters released in hardcover.  Believe it or not, this beloved book of Chuck's is the only novel of his that was never released in this format.  At the time, this was Chuck's specific wish. Invisible Monsters (originally titled Manifesto) was written before Fight Club but was never originally allowed to see the light of day because his publishers rejected it, due to its disturbing content.  Rather than let this news set him back, Chuck did the opposite of what everyone expected and amped things up even further with Fight Club, which then ironically got published and become his "first" novel.

Three years later in 1999, the same year Chuck published Survivor, he got to finally see the release of Invisible Monsters, as a slightly revised edition.  He then insisted that this novel only be released in paperback, as he hated the idea of charging his fans too much for it.

Little did Chuck know that this would turn out to be, perhaps, his most universally loved novel. So it will come as no surprise that a few years later, in the early days of this website, a movement began to get Invisible Monsters re-released in hardcover.  The fans were demanding it.  We even started an online petition. read more »
