Chuck's Next Novel Is "Damned"

Chuck Palahniuk

In a recent Q&A Doubleday conducted with Chuck Palahniuk, he revealed plans for his next novel, to be released in Fall 2011.  And most recently, Chuck talked a little more about Damned in his interview with SuicideGirls.com:

So Damned is about an eleven-year old girl who wakes up basically and finds that she is in hell and that she's dead, and that she's going to be eleven-years old and dead in hell for the rest of eternity. So she has to, number one, make friends and figure out how hell works and make the best of it. But she's also got to figure out why she's in hell and how she died, and then ultimately whether or not she wants to petition to go to heaven, to try and uncover some mistake that might have been made. So it's about an eleven-year old, a very optimistic, cheerful, pushy little girl who finds herself in hell.

From the Random House Q&A:

My next novel, the one for 2011 -- argh, my life is so mapped out -- is a novel called Damned about an eleven-year-old girl who finds herself in Hell and learns how to manipulate the corrupt system of demons and bodily fluids. Imagine if The Shawshank Redemption had a baby by The Lovely Bones and it was raised by Judy Blume, and you have my next new project.  It's so frustrating when this girl, Madison, realizes that she'll never grow up and become an adult... and believe me, I know just how she feels.  Each new day, I look at my chest in the bathroom mirror, sideways, and hope it's grown.

Maybe if they could invent a 3-D mirror...

It's okay to begin getting excited now.

i love how he's like "argh, my life's so mapped out". well, stop fucking churning out a damn book every year and do something different!

oh, and while i'm at it, must everything he does now have something to do with "bodily fluids", it's getting tacky.

One book a year really isnt that much. The few times i have met the guy he has multiple stories in the works and im sure he is limiting himself to one book a year. What would you rather he do, construction? He is a writer, writing books is what he does. And if you ask me hes doing a great job at it.

his last couple of books have been less than mediocre. all i'm saying is instead of just thinking of another idea involving some EDGY character that does EDGY stuff to do with BODILY FLUIDS, maybe he should take a step back and stop just writing what he thinks everyone expects of him. because yes, it is getting tacky. i know i know, Tom Spanbauer says the only things worth writing about are dangerous and all that, but you can pus boundariies outside of trying to make peoples stomachs do backflips.

when i first read what his new book (the 2011 one) was about, i honestly thought: hahaha, funny. what a jokester. but then i realised it was not a joke. eeek! but it does sound like an inteesting premise for a story. but it's sounding more and more like he's writing for the 16 year old FITEKLUB KIDZ that LUV his book!!!11!! LOLOLOZ!

just saying.

"This is his style of writing, and to be honest, I absolutly love it. I couldn't stand reading for the longest time because I couldn't find an author that could hold my attention, they were all so... boring. He writes, and he writes well. Id suggest to you, if you are getting tired of his writting then stop reading his books and find someone who does excite you. I'd hate to take sales away from him, but I don't think he should compromise his style for one whiney person.
Oh, and where you said maybe he shouldn't churn out books so often.. He's a writer, it's what he does. And I think if he hated it so much he wouldn't do it anymore. And, no, i don't think "churning out" one a year compromises the quality of any of his books...most writers have multiple projects going at one time.
Anyway, all Im saying is, if you don't like it don't read it. Im done. For now."

thats what i'm saying

I have to admit, I do think these novels are starting to sound a bit forced - sick for the sake of sick's sake.
And they're not working for me.
I haven't enjoyed a Chuck novel since Haunted.

I don't want to give up though, because no other author can write a novel as impressive to me as Survivor, Fight Club, Choke, Invisible Monsters or Haunted.
Even Diary & Lullaby, though to a lesser extent, were good novels and better than Rant, Snuff & Pygmy.

Any one here enjoy these 3 novels as much as his first few?

Like i said, i don't wanna give up on Chuck easily after what he's given us in the past, so i'll buy Tell-All but i'm very dubious but hopefull.
If this & Damned are less enjoyable, his bad novels with outweigh his good in my opinion.

all i can say is that i really like reading his books i read all his fiction work but i was kinda hoping for another book with a science fiction touch. im not a big fan of that genre but he did rant so freakin good. but i admit i enjoy an author who switches it up and chuck never really disappoints me, so i will keep reading his stuff even if along the line i find one i dont like as much as the others, he still for me wrote some of the best novels ever and no books ever make me laugh or disgusted the way his do. gotta admit im lookin forward to damned

Rant is actually one of my favorite books of his. I know it was written in a different style, and some people found it "confusing", but in my opinion it is up there with Survivor, Choke, Invisible Monsters and Fight Club.
I also quite enjoy Lullaby, and thought Diary was fairly decent as well.
I agree Snuff and Pygmy were getting pretty out there... but I don't understand so many peoples dislike for Rant. Rant was mind blowing!
And I for one am FAR from giving up on Chucks books!

I understand some people's points about Chuck's work. I think it would do his fans some good to re-read Fight Club. After my second jaunt through it I realized how modest it was in comparison to his other works. I also don't think we can deny what an excellent book that was either. Indeed, Chuck may be getting his rocks off recently by shock-value but I don't think he's limited to it.

When it comes to the premise of this next book, its far too early to judge it. In fact, until we actually read it we can't make a call as to whether it will be a stereotypical Chuckfest of insanity, bodily fluids and deprevation. In fact, if such a chaotic scene as Hell is contrasted with real and palpable characters then we may be singing a different tune about Chuck's work. Until then, I'm still a fan and an avid Chuck reader.

cassandra and beverly both signed up just to give that comment. that's pretty fucking cool !!

being off the grid for a lil minute--family and friends stuff--i just now came across this. what an odd premise for chuck. but then again, when i first walked into the local barnes store and saw a huge fucking display of rant hard covers, a book about a serial killer and pussy plugs and told in a crazy fucking narrative, i wondered how it was received with so much enthusiasm from a chain store. especially in conservative and very republican arkansas. rant at the time i thought was a departure for him. but anymore, that is the word farthest from chuck. he just does all kinds of different shit. he doesnt always knock it out of the park--so few authors do--but he always hits hard. rant was great. pygmy may be his best. those are pretty recent novels. to say he lost it or fell off is just being dim or picky or you just like seeing your words. ha, levi. that was for you! Smile

all of his books seem nuts. whether talking about a mountain of porn (for fucks sake haha) or a novel written in the form of a glamor magazine or cutting off thumbs and plugging dicks in a rubber vagina stuffed with razor blades or a little girl in hell being rebellious against the system and slowly getting frustrated that she'll never grow up. they are all twisted and fun. and on top of it all, chuck writes well.

not like king churning out thousand-page novels yearly. he's a master storyteller but his writing sucks, i definitely praise chuck over most writers.

party crashing sounds like the shit. o yea why does everybody not like snuff i thought it was good it had an original plot and the characters were pretty interesting. but to each his own. i got a question for everyone out of all chucks books which one that isnt a movie already do you think would be the sickest. i go for invisible monsters the characters in that book are way twisted and i think it would be hilarious and gross to see the chick with no jaw. i think sarah jessica parker should be cast in that role seeing as how her face is already fucked.

Okay so Chuck is the best at suspense and plot twists. Unfortunately, the past few books I have read--Pygmy, Rant and Snuff all seem to drop the ball rather heavily on my brain. Where is the Chuck that I love? I really hope Tell-All brings back the twist that I desire...please.

Also, Chuck, could you please tell your publicist that Pennsylvania would really like you to pay a visit to them?

MATTHEW ODONNELLget out of here. i don't know how you could describe his work as tacky. if you really wanna know whats tacky it would be your picture. no wonder you can only concentrate on bodily fluids. you obviously dont read palahniuks books very well if all you get out of it are the parts about bodily fluids. I read his books for his amazing criticisms of society and, of course, his twists. He IS edgy even without the bodily fluids. Please dont hate on palahniuk on his website, your opinion is not worth it since the majority of the people that go on this site are fans of him. Stop trying to be the antagonist. it's "tacky".

Sorry to say but the man is nothing short than genious. If someone was to write one bad book, I wouldnt come on to HIS OFFICIAL WEBSITE to say, ‘you’re shit’. Go write books that leave me in complete astonishment and I will lick every drop of sweat that ever persperates from that sack between thy legs.

Its very easy to look down upon a work of art, but very hard to create one.

One thing I've taken from Chuck's books (and it may be one of his quotes, I'm not sure) is that it's much easier to destroy something than it is to create something. I'm not going to ask the people bashing Chuck how many books they've written, but in that light, why not offer some constructive feedback instead of, "It's tacky," or "EDGY character that does EDGY stuff to do with BODILY FLUIDS." I'm not sure if he reads these comments or not, but say he does, what is he going to gain from that kind of feedback? My guess would be nothing...or not much.

Also, I agree with usedbyyou88,

[I'd] suggest to you, if you are getting tired of his [writing] then stop reading his books and find someone who does excite you.

I'm going to go on a limb and say a lot of us who got hooked on Chuck's books was because his writing excited us. I'm a musician and when certain music doesn't do anything for me anymore I go search for something new--discovering something new is half the fun. Maybe looking at people's recommendations for other material is the way discover something new and exciting. However, I do understand people's loyalty to Chuck; I'm one of them.

In my personal experience, when I've admired someone it's hard to see the wrong in them, or better yet, the human in them; in that they will do things that are less-than-extraordinary every once in a while. I'm guessing it's tough to be amazing all the time.

And as aside, I'm not trying to flame anyone or kick up any dust. I'd just like to see people put more thought into the feedback they give--positive or negative. Many times that same feedback we give to others can be applied directly to ourselves.

P.S. Snuff was great because I loved characters and the way it was told. Pygmy was hard to read because of the way it was written. Fight Club, Survivor, Lullaby, Rant, Invisible Monsters, and Choke were all simply genius for reasons that the others above have mentioned. If he never came out with another great book, which would be hard to believe but it could happen, I'd be happy reading said works for the remainder of my time on earth.

Best to everyone on here!

'It's easy to attack and destroy an act of creation. It's a lot more difficult to perform one.' A response from Chuck to a review of Diary, I believe.

Long time fan, first time Cult website joiner and poster person.

I'm looking forward to 'Damned', I find all of Chuck's work unique and intriguing. I don't love some of his books like I love others, but I can certainly appreciate aspects of each book. Each one is different, and I haven't found that any focus primarily on bodily fluids...Although they may be mentioned regularly. Besides, bodily fluids are frequent occurrences in our daily lives. Learn to love them, Matthew!

I'm curious to know about the 'Rant' sequel too! Did I read somewhere that it's a trilogy?
Anyway, I think 'Rant' is a fantastic book. I really enjoyed everything about it, especially the writing style. Chuck's writing style in general, actually. I find it hard to read books by many authors solely because of the way they're written. I find a lot of them are over descriptive, tedious and long winded; but being able to read anything by Chuck doesn't make me feel like I'm missing out on anything else Smile I feel over compensated, to be honest. Surprisingly I had no problems reading 'Pygmy' though. It reminded me of reading 'Trainspotting' years ago!

Yeah, I'm still waiting for the sequel to Rant ... Rant is my #1 favorite Chuck Palahniuk book. I agree that his writing is so formula to find it lacking in ingenuity ... it's become ... a bit boring. Heck, of course I rather read him than many others but still; I fell in love with his writing because the writing was so refreshingly different and concise. But now it is largely clear and concise and not so refreshing. I love Chuck but I wish he'd drop the whole chorus thing; and the bolding of names dropped in Tell-All (which I liked) really bugged my eyes.

I think what Rant had that most of his other works didn't was intimacy- it bled through the form, through the scads of narrators giving their personal takes. Distance is a cold and ugly bitch although she is clear.

Anyhow, yeah, more Rant, Please.

Snuff wasn't one of my favorites, but I don't understand how people are so willing to dismiss it, as I feel it ranks with others like Haunted. Never before have I ever actually felt as dirty and disgusting as I did while reading that book. I felt the crushed chips and sticky tanning oil on the bottom of my feet. If someone, by means of writing, can make you feel that way, then I think he's done his job to some extent.

Can't wait for Damned. After he explained the circumstances under which he started the novel at his Chicago reading, I think it'll be much better than Tell-All.

...why is this my first post? Who knows.

Definitely agree with Cassandra - Rant has to be my favorite book of all time.

And, I find this new book of Chuck's quite interesting. I'm a fan of literature affiliated with dark stuff like creatures with horns, flames emitting out of the ground, cries filled with torment and suffering, or better known as Hell. Tongue

I'm a geek for The Divine Comedy. Maybe "Madison" will have a guide to teach her about Hell, similar to Virgil being Dante's guide...

Maybe Anna Nicole Smith? Smile Big

I just finished Haunted and I loved it! Survivor and Rant are my top two favorites for sure. I have read Survivor 3 times now and it is the only book I have ever re-read. The way that Rant was written was amazing. It started out hard to follow but once I got into it I couldn't believe how easy it was to read.

I have gotten hooked on Chuck's books by his writing style. Reading Haunted and Rant with how he has to write so differently with each character has me hooked for life.

Thank you for the wonderful works you have created. I'm proud to be an Oregonian along with you.

What did chuck say was the reason he started this novel? I know he started it when his mom was in the hospital. Is that what you're talking about or is it something else? Do share
